Can anyone elighten me on the differences between an ideal military sniper scope and LE marksman scope?

Would 10X fixed scopes be appropriet for LE, or would something like 6X work better for shorter range?

Most of us are now using leupold 3.5 x 10 SF 30 mm 40 m obj tactical scopes. M1 variant for LEO (1/4 click). M3 for mil (1/2 click).

Bill, I have to disagree. Most PD Snipers use the standard VariX3 3.5x10x40. The newer LR with 30mm tube is not as common but has a growing following. The Varix3 LR M3 Tactical, you speak of has 1/2moa windage and 1moa elevation adjustments, just like the MK4 M3. Very few LR M3's are being used by MIlitary units. They are still mostly MK4 M3's.

You are correct, Sir. What I should have said was that the M1's are better suited to LE.

Most guys down here have upgraded to the 30mm variables. My favorite scope is still the 4.5 x 14 40 mm. The range of magnification seems to be perfect for most situations. Fast on target. Sweet piece of gear.

I still love the Kahles ZF-84M 10x. The glass is incredible, the simple half man stadia lines are surprisingly accurate and the BDC cams true to thier respective loads. If it were a 30mm tube I'd like mine better, but the light is really sucked in.
For LE, why don't more units go for the Hughes Leitz Elcan in 3.4x. I'd feel comfortable inside the head shot area past 400 yards and it can cook at dusk and later. The Blackcat is a gussied up Night Vision scope that is an Elcan with wires and brains. I think over 6X for LE is largely wasted. If you need 14x to resolve, then it's time to call up someone else to the line, or suspend the op.
