I too agree. Shot one at the SOC shoot. Very impressive.

For a limited budget you can't go wrong with the savage. Take a look at the bolt to breach matchup on a couple of them before you pick one and make sure that the bolt is straight in-line with the barrel and that the locking lugs are matching up straight with the breach. good hunting.

Actually you won't know until you shoot it. Most have mediocre barrels but every now and then you will find one that shoots exceptionally well. For not much more you could have a nice Remington 700.

Sharky is right but the quality of Remington has come into question in the last year or so. You may even want to look at the new Winchester Stelth they shoot really well and the quality is good.
The thing about going with Winchester or Remington is that you can have them rebarreled down the road and you will have a quality rifle that is worth some money if you decide to sell it.

Good post Pat. I like the Remington myself. Probably because it's what I'm most familiar with. Remingtons are also easier to bed than the Winchesters if you're going that route.

HK:
I use a Savage myself for the same reason as you are looking into one. Mine is a tackdriver but compared to a Stealth or Remmy it's a little less forgiving when you change ammo. I have found the Stealth to be an all day long tack-drivong machine and in the future I will propably go that route...
