Pfft....that's a fission power core...
It's a horizontal flux capacitor.

ICBWrong, but that looks like a test bird from years ago - orange test & measure probe mounted & the SAT Antenna is original style?
Perhaps a fuselage test mount of a FW ALQ-144 IR CM system?
Or, a new photo showing the USAF's new COMCAST tie in so the pilots have cable in the hooch AND the A/C...
So, the A-10C(?) now has an R2 unit, and what appears to be an iron right behind it...

-That's an auxiliary lift unit, designed for tight turns while fully loaded...

It's on an A-10, thus it must have something to do with the conversion of targets into pink mist or smoking holes... one would hope.

Sixgun is correct - that's a C-model test setup, probably at the 422 TES. But the "R2" is the antenna for the EGI (Embedded GPS/INS) system, and it's been around quite a while...well before the C model came out. The antenna behind that is the SATCOM antenna if anyone is curious.
Having said that, I like the original idea better.
