There are grades for a reason. Match vs. Ball is what I think you are referring to. Ball is standard issue, Match is usually for sniper and match target. Ball is cheaper and easier to come buy. Match is hard to get(sometimes) and used primarly for sniper work.

It would depend on the mission. The 150gr ball is standard issue for machineguns, with these you want dispersion, a cone of fire, for area fire. The M118 Match is used for percision fire at pin point target by snipers and AMU folks shooting paper. so both are needed and do well in their mission.
