Hey Fellow's,
This year our unit has experienced two seperate incidents where the Federal 308 win. match round 168 gr. failed ignition after the firing pin struck the primer. The two rounds were different lot numbers and the primers were punched.
We have been using Federal ammo for the last 5 years and never had a miss fire until this year. Both incidents occurred using Remington 700's DM. I was just wondering if anyone else has ran into this problem ?

Coop,
What was the air temperature?
Was there powder in the case?
Was the primer crushed, i.e., seated extra deep in the primer pocket?
Federal primers are cooler than the old Match ammo primers, and could have had insufficient heat to ignite the powder in cold weather.
Mostlikely a crushed primer.
This is the first, I've hear of this problem with Federal ammo.

Riflemaster,
I still have one of the mis-fired cartridges
and upon further examination it appears the primer is CRUSHED. It does'nt have the same firing pin indentation as the spent cartridge and appears to be set a little lower in the case.
Just for your info both rounds were fired in approx. 90 degree weather (dry climate).
I guess we just had some weird luck.

That's different. I'd say that was a freak accident. I've never even heard of a GM misfiring. I would bet that Federal would really like to see that round.

Coop,
I would ship that bad cartridge back to the Federal Quality Assurance Department or Customer Services. Call them first and get a RGA (return of goods authorization) for shipping cost reimbursement. I'm sure the quality folks at Federal will want to "Root Cause" the problem and take corrective action.
Hell, You may get some free ammo!

I have a Remington 700 Police DM also, I normally use the same ammo that you are using, and I have never had any trouble what so ever with it. I agree with RifleMaster, ship it off to Federal.
