I have a REM700 PSS on its way and wanted to get abasic ballistics from any one that has one with a 26" barrel. Most of the data that I have found they have used a 24" barrel. What if any differences would there be between the two barrels? Velocity would be the only thing that I can think of which would mean a drop also. Can some one enlighten me as I am a new shooter to long range. Will be using this rifle for the 600 yard matches as well as 1000 yard matches to. Thanks

You can expect about 25-35 fps increase in
velocity per 1in of barrel added. So you
should have approx. 50-70 fps increase going
from the 24in to the 26. Not enough for you to notice since most loads can vary that
much from shot to shot unless you are very
precise in your handloading techniques.
Hope this helps.

Lighting,
The big thing you will need to do, if your a new shooter, is to make sure you get a good tappered base so you will be able to adjust your scope to reach 1000yds.
You may also want to go with the 175s instead of the 168s they will fly better at the longer ranges. If you reload you can push 168s fast enough to be accurate at 1000yds but your best bet will be the 175s.

To add to what Sharky said you should decide what type of shooting you want to do. If its tactical you may want to opt for a MOA adjustment rather than the quarter MOA adjustments. I have both and use one or the other depending on the type of match I am shooting.

Yep. MOA adjustments keep the elevation down to one complete turn versus two. Sucks to be 15 MOA off on your elevation because you didn't look at your elevation knob closely enough......LOL (not speaking from experience or anything)

Good to see you over here Pat. Your knowledge will be a welcome addition to the site.

Thanks Sharky..
I heard about the sight and the big debate with Rod and once I found it I liked some of the posts I read.
I don't know how much I'll be able to add, I am no military sniper, but have done a lot of long range shooting over the years and love to compete.

PS
That being off a full turn on my scope at the most inopertune time has never happened to me either(HA).

Pat,

No diploma required here my friend. Not unless you claim you have one which you haven't. Welcome aboard. I look forward to learning a few things. You'll fit in well with JY and Riflemaster.

Which leupold scope would you recommend that has the MOA adjustment instead of the 1/4 MOA. Have been looking at the 4.5-14 x 42 IOR Valdada scope my friend can get me this scope way cheaper than I have seen advertised. I hope to learn alot from all of the experience you all hold. I haven't been shooting long range very long and hope to be able to at least hit the target at 1000 yards some day soon.

Thanks Sharky I look forward to meeting some of the rest of the guys.

Lighting..
I am not familiar with the Valdada other than a few things I have heard. Most good some bad so its your choice. I would stay with Leupold. You get what you pay for in glass.
I have the 3.5x10LR in the MOA adj. and I love it. The only negative thing about it is that its not always as sharp at 100yds as I would like. But then again this is designed for tactical shooting and sniping and for that its hard to beat.
For the 1/4 min. I would go with a 4.5x14 tactical with the mil dots. I would personally stay away from the 50MM lens its to big and takes tall mts. to make it fit a fat barrel and then you have problems with finding your cheak weld. I feel that its a gimmick.
I have tested them in low light against my 4.5x14 and could tell no difference in light gathering quality. They eye will only take in so much light and the 50MM is overkill in my opinion, for what thats worth.

Hi Pat Murphy!

Welcome aboard! It's alittle slow now, but we do get into some good discussions from time-to-time.

I've been a National Match Course and long range competitor for over twenty years. I love the sport! I was a sniper in RVN IF I can count 105mm and 155mm. http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif

Are you mostly shooting Palma or 1000 yard competitions?

Thanks Carl,
Looking forward to some discussions!! You guys have a nice sight here. I do tactical shooting. I have never done any formal long range shooting. My son shoots on the Neb. Guard rife and sniper team though and I envy you guys ability to shoot off hand and sitting. When it comes to position shooting I have a hard time hitting a suburban off hand(HA).

I like the tactical matches and try to shoot any that are close around me. The D&L shoot in Wyoming is the best one I have shot at. Meet some really nice people at them.

Sharky,
Now I am worried about you if you know those two!!! I laughed my rear off at the match in Wyoming with Strausburger. My son and the rest of the "Baby Snipers" Brewer brought out to the match found a big stuffed red and yellow flower in a dumpster and stuck it in the grill of Strausburgers vehicle. He found it and then stuck it in Brewers and we took pictures of it stuck in his grill with the "Ranger" licence plate right below it.

The young guys all got a big laugh out of that then when they left Strausburger stuck it back into thier grill and they drove back to town and all over with the big red and yellow flower sticking out of the grill of there goverment van. They about crapped their drawer when they found it(HA).

Did you hear that Brewer is leaving AK and headed back to Neb. to head up the drug task force or something to do with that anyway??

LMAO....I've had some fun with those guys over the years. They are good people. Didn't know Brewer was going back to do CD either. I've been out of touch for awhile with most of those guys. Not surprised to hear that Nebraska won the Wilsons either. They had some good teachers.

That they do. My son and I shot the D&L match about 4 years ago and he was looking at getting into a Guard unit so he could do some shooting and maybe get a sniper school. I had talked to Brewer on the phone a couple of times about the match and had heard of him from the Lt. who runs the State Patrols SWAT team.

When we got to Wyoming and he was out there with his boys and when we got the chance we talked to him about Shawn joining their Guard unit. He wanted to know what his back ground was and when he found out he had just got out of the Navy he told his Sgt. to give him the Neb Guards standard card and that his unit was full and pretty specialized so not much chance of getting in it.

During the shoot we were both in the top 10 all the way through and then on the last day during a man on man comp Shawn drew Strausburger and I was pimping him about how tough Mike was and Brewer said, damn your hard on that kid doing that to him. I told him that he shoots better under pressure and when he beat Mike, Brewer came over and wanted to know about his shooting back ground then told Shawn to give him back that card and gave him his personal card and told him to call him in the next week or two.

Shawn joined a month later and as they say the rest is histoy. Brewer has sent him to a couple of sniper schools and has more or less adopted him. He has really been good to him and Shawn thinks he's the greatest thing since canned beer. He now shoots on the sniper team and the rifle team and is in hog heaven. He's one of the good guys in my book.

If he beat Mike, he definitely has a future in shooting. Wish I could've seen that, I would still be giving Mike hell about it......LOL But, yes they are both good guys. Wanna have some fun with Brewer? Tell him your gonna have Shawn start shooting smallbore and you're hooking him up with "Rimfire Ronnie"...no more Combat Rifle or Sniper.......hahahahahah.

Just be sure that when he lets Brewer off the hook that he tells Brewer I put him up to it.........LMAO

Sharky,
I ment to ask you, by chance do you know Tim Webber?? Will Brewer know you as Sharky and who is Rimfire Ronnie???

Sharky
17 October 2001, 18:44
Tim is a close friend although we've been out of touch for a while. He is currently in Chicago working for the USMS. I know that as of two weeks ago he was still in DC working with the SOG team there. Glad you mentioned that. I need to give that fag a call.

Rimfire Ronnie would be Ronnie Wigger. Son of the famed shooter, Lones Wigger, who was probably one of the greatest smallbore shooters in history and is/was a coach at the OTC last I heard.(Lones...not Ronnie)
Ronnie has some inane job at the NGMTU doing smallbore stuff that keeps him semi-gainfully employed....LOL...he's a nice guy...for a smallbore geek.

I'll fire you an e-mail with my name. Brewer wouldn't know me as Sharky. That's just an alias I created for internet use.
