View Full Version : Spray painting

I'm planning on dying the burlap green, brown, and yellow. To me it seems a decent idea to then spray paint the burlap with those same colors over some areas to provide variations. Question is: Spray paint before or after cutting the burlap and attaching it?

I'm leery of doing it after because the strands might start sticking together...

Any thoughts?

I decided that instead of asking half a dozen questions seperatly, I'll just post it in one big mess. The issue is the burlap. Here is my plan for prepping the burlap.

Note: When I say yellow, I mean a darker color, a dead-grass sort, the brown is earthy brown. The green is a dark vegetation color.

Prepping burlap:

- Cut burlap in strips 2-3" wide and 12-48" long.

- Dye burlap strips in a green/brown/yellow ratio of 3:1:1 (Good ratio ???). Vary shadings limiting concentration and soak time.

- Spray paint over the strips (laid-out next to each other) at random areas with green, brown, and yellowish colors for variation.

Any issues here? I don't know about the ratios. Thanks for your insight..

If you use normal spray paint, it will crack with time. Use fabric dye, it's messy but does the job. I also found using tea bags in water in a bucket is a great way to make the lighter colors a little browner.

When i made my ghillie suit to get the right collors i actualy hav to not only use less dye but i had to mix a little yellow to give it a better color.
