I have recently attempted to make my first ghillie suit and when I tryed to dye the jute with fabric dye, the jute went fuzzy and looked kind of like a wig. Its it the jute I am using, or is this natural?
I am inexperienced in this craft so can anyone give me advice.
thanks

Its normal. Dont worry about it, when you weed it out, it wont be a problem.

Why are you dying it, and what the hell is Jute ?
Gharnish (Burlap material) that we use in our Ghillie Suits is available in the appropriate colors. (Tan, shades of green, brown and Khaki). It even comes in nice rolls that are about 50' in length, by 2" wide.
And more importantly. Why do you need a Ghillie Suit ?

I saw on some web page a ghillie suit made out of jute and since I didn't have any burlap, but plenty of jute, I decided to make to use jute.
I wanted to make a ghillie suit for a paintball match that is coming up in a month.

O.K., but let me show my ignorance by asking again, what is jute ?

whoops, I forgot to answer the first part. Jute is some kind of thread. It looks kind of like rope (atleast mine did.) I used jute twine, and I don't know if thast is the correct one. I have seen jute in hardware stores and here is a link to the site that I looked at to get some info on jute ghillie suits.

If what I am writing is wrong, please correct me. Thanks
btw, Gunny Hicks ignorant, I highly doubt it.

Jute is a netting that is used (in socal anyway) as a shell for iceplant (and other green stuff) to grow on. It is used on embankments and walls. You will see it at housing developments and other landscaping ventures.
The best way to use it for paintball is to get a flat piece, cut a hole in the center and wear it like a poncho. For garnish, use the veg in the area you will be playing. Leave it there and let shit grow in it. Pick it up again next time you play.
This is good for paintball and games, but if you want a real ghillie suit ask the gunny. He runs Sniper school for the Marine Corps. SOE builds a good platform, you can see it at www.soegear.com. (http://www.soegear.com.)
Hope that helps.

There is a kit which is in the military supply system known as:
Ghillie Suit Accessory Kit (GSAK)
NSN: 8415-01-394-7698
It contains everything, including a sewing kit, shoe ghoo, etc, for making a good Ghillie Suit.
The NSN's for the Gharnish strips are:
Burlap Material, 2-inches wide by 100 feet, in teh following colors:
Moss Green 8305-01-418-5134
Hunter Green 8305-01-418-5137
Brown 8305-01-418-5130
Natural 8305-01-418-5065
For those who have access to the supply system,I hope this is useful.

the jute that ghilliesuits.com is selling is more like a burlap twine...Nothing more, frays and shags well, also if you drag it around behind the vehicle down your favorite dirt/mud road, it colors well and doesn't smell like man made stuff....
For those that are slower than me, I meant dragging the suit, not a roll of twine...LOL

OK, in the army we refer to garnish as JUTE. we use the 2 in. stips in the ghillie suit construction kit but we also buy it from the only company in the country that makes colored burlap (don't ask me who, I get mine from Sniper school. They have the number, name and adress). Sniper School has it in 3 or 4 foot wide rolls that cost $85.00 a piece. These rolls are enough to do more than one suit each. for example if you use 5 colors you will need 5 rolls. This should get you at least 7 or 8 suits. The rolls that come in the ghillie construction kit are never enough to make a suit. I never knew that they had a seperate NSN for each little roll. Thats great info gunny, for units that are away from the school house. Every time we send a guy off to school, he has instructions to steal every piece of jute (garnish) and hemp rope that is not under lock and key. My unit has not paid for burlap in a couple of years http://www.specialoperations.com/ubboard/smile.gif

Is the shaggy and fluffy effect the desired effect?

I guess it would depend on your location. San Francisco might be a good place to blend with the fluffy look. Or maybe leather and a collar would be your best bet.
