Need a source for netting for use in a Ghillie. Tried the WalMart hammock approach, but can only find them in white, not subdued colors.
Also what size netting (the opening) is best, if any?

there are many nets out there, depending on your taste, i use 1"x1" netting. the best i have found is a nylon net at this place http://www.ghilliesuits.com/products_netting.htm
Check the surplus stores for the net hammocks(also the mail order shops like Brigade QM and such). They are OD in color and made of strong nylon. One hammock will give you enough net to do a suit and head cover, and MUCH stronger than the fish net commercial stuff.
I've used 550 cord on my suit and it works great. It does require a rigger sewing machine to attach(good to have friends in the rigger loft)But works better than netting.

Tried the netting from Ghillie Suits.com. Very good deal but the smell of oil based products left me with the feeling I would be a candle if near fire. Same with their pre strung burlap. If you go that route get plenty of fire retardant. Prices were dirt cheap.
On the netting versus para cord. I have gone to net on the upper portion and the para cord for the lower. Reason is, and I learned the hard way from Master Sergeant Hicks is the net holds natural vegetation much better and looks more natural when you do so.
The para cord, striped of the inside and sewn in place does not snag as much as the net on the legs. Since you dont need as much natural veg on the legs its not an issue. The taking of the inside out of the para cord makes it fal more natural and is stronger than you should ever need, plus weight is decreased by a slight amount.
JY I have a riggers sewing machine.

Guys, thanks for the tips.
One more question. On the 550 cord. Do you actually construct a mesh from the cord or what?
Don
With para cord you "S" it down the back. For veg attachment you place verticle sections towards the sides so the veg is in a realistic angle. The outside turns of the "S" is also used for veg attachment. For veg placement on the center back I like to use elastic(green in color not BLACK)attached to the horizontal parra cord run(blousing twists work too, though not as long, make a similar item from stronger elastic and you're good to go).
Some adivice from recent experience, NEVER...NEVER...wear a fresh vegged up suit in a cow pasture http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/eek.gif Lousy bovines think you're a salad bar http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/rolleyes.gif Just a tip but, watch those cows, they are very nosey and will walk up to a well camo'd trooper and stare at him showing you his position...maybe revenge for McDonalds http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif
Take care...Jim

I used the cammo net thats used for concealing equipment and such. Works pretty good and all plus it adds extra stips of camo pieces. well thats my two cents.
