View Full Version : Army Reserve sniper school options?
Does anybody know if Army Reserve personel are elilgible to attend regular Army sniper schools? I'd like an answer from current Army reservists that have been to one or regular Army soldiers that know. Or am I limited to civilian schools like HSS?
Does anywon have a recomended civilian class? Like Storm Mountain or HSS and Thunder Ranch? Experieces with these? Thanks.

Do it right, or not at all.
There is a fine National Guard Sniper School in Little Rock AK.
If your looking for first rate instruction on the civilian side by former and current Marine Scout/Snipers try Surgical Shooting in WA.

I'm a Canadian Forces reservist. I've been to Surgical Shooting, run by Cpl Taylor, USMC. Top notch. Next course is June 19th-24th at the USMC sniper school in Camp Pendleton, CA. Worth every penny.

To my knowledge, there is no reserve component Sniper School. I worked as an instructor at the Scout/Sniper school in Little Rock, Arkansas for several years. It is a terrific school run by former marine, ranger, SOTIC, and regular Army snipers. We managed to take all the good stuff from Bragg, Quantico, and Benning and turn it into one hell of a sniper course. The course is currently run by a former marine by the name of Ben Dolan. Great guy who knows his shit. If you are interested contact the NG Marksmanship Training Unit at (501) 212-4500 and ask for Maj. Miles or SFC Dolan. They also train active law enforcement officers on a limited basis. Sometimes they run a 2 week course which is grueling and sometimes a 3 week course. P.S. If you can't pass the Army APFT don't waste your time. It is required on site on day 1. Hope this helps.

Thanks, everyone. I wanted to do the official Scout/Sniper school, for the training and the been there done that, but I'm not in the proper MOS and the Army says I'm color blind.
Civilian is my route then, although it would have been nice to get the school listed in my records.
Thanks again. Let me know of any other good schools.

Ive heard the Arkansas sniper school at Camp Robinson has a very unique instructor. Her last name is Redhorse, a tall, big titty, hard body, native american. Apparently she is also on the the arkansas NG marksmanship team and is currently in the lead with the most points throughout the armed services.

She's not an instructor. However she is a damn good shot, a very good friend of mine, and not bad looking at all. However, she is engaged to another very good friend of mine who is also the NCOIC of the school there.(sorry guys!) I'll just say that any negative posts about her will definitely draw fire from me.

Gary, steve runs some schools for the state of OK. Guard and LE. He doesn't run the actual NGSS school. Ben Dolan has that job presently. But, if you ever get a chance to train with steve it will be a great experience.

"The" NGSS School is in Little Rock. Stephen runs a different NG school in OK. Still NG, still Sniper. "Not SS".
Stephen is close to retiring, so any of you NG shooters want some excellent training need to get aboard soon.

Here is a little additional info. The NG Sniper school in Little Rock has been evaluated by Benning and starting in Jan 01, you will be given the Sniper ASI (additional skill identifier)just as if you went to Benning. This is a credit to the heck of a job SFC Dolan and his boys are doing up there in Arkansas.

BUT, there was also a lot of hard work that needs to be recognized also, namely Charlie Gentry, Kent Gooch, Dwight Peck, Tim Weber, and Roger Krause. THEY are the guys that made it happen. My congrats to Ben, Boatright, Greene and the rest. I'm glad to hear our long battle with Benning over the ASI is finally over. Keep up the good work guys. If any of you are reading this, this is starcluster. Ha-Ha. How's the Jolly Roger?

I'll have to agree with Gooch. He made a lot of good things happen down there. He also is the chief editor of a new online shooting magazine called The Rifleman.
