In the Bundeswehr, snipers are givin laser range finders. Yet they still have to learn other types of range estimation. Just in case the tech fails.

Heigt in yards, times 1000, devided by height in Mils = Range in yards.
Laser range finders are not issued, bor are they avaliable for Scout/Sniper in the Marine Corps.
Extensive training is given to range estimation, and shooting unknown distance/multiple targets engagements at different unknown distances.

In LE most have the cheap IR type Lasers and are pee pee poor at any other method. I teach Mildots and for LE they are ideal because of known sizes of objects such as windows and stop signs. Lasers are great unless it is foggy or it is night time and the bad guys have any form of NVD. Then you are saying Here I am.
I use Lasers but not after dark.

For an easy way to do mildots get a Mildot Master. It is a slide rule that gives you the range very fast and is cheap.

It is recommended that you never, under any circumstances, rely on just one method: Even with a laser rangefinder, it's possible, however unlikely, that you fucked up in some way. I try to use at least three different methods to determine the range, with Measuring on the map, MIL formula estimation and Hatching being the more common. For most instances you differ between measuring and estimating before determining the range. You allways opt to measure if possible.
It also depends on your mission: For your own shot, estimating the range might do just fine but if, for example, you're measuring for Long Range Artillery purposes you'll want to be pretty exact...
