I was just wondering what exactly the process entails for an active 0311/0316 to go over to a reserve Recon unit. I would have given them a call and talked to their monitor but im currently in Japan. I will have about 11 months of active duty left when we get back to the states so im trying to start the process as soon as possible. Am I going to have to wait until Im off of active duty to go to BRC or how does that work? Thanks in advance for any help and information.

It would seem to me that you would need to be in a unit that gets a quota of class seats at BRC. That most likely doesn't include your current unit (2/7). The only way I can see you getting to BRC before your EAS wold be if the reserve unit you're going to is willing to cough up a seat for you, AND your current unit is willing to let you go TAD prior to getting out. The likelihood of that is slim because the reserve unit doesn't know you yet, you haven't passed their selection process, and I doubt they would risk wasting a seat on someone they don't know anything about. However, it wouldn't hurt to call and ask. Stranger things have happened. Just don't hold your breath.

The only other possibility is if BRC does a standby quota kind of thing. When I worked at ARS the units from Lejeune sometimes sent more men than they had seats for. That way if someone failed the screening there was another guy waiting in the wings to fill that seat. If BRC still does this you might slide in. Keep in mind that what I'm talking about is 10+ years ago. I don't know if BRC still operates the same way now that they're closer to the flagpole.

Start talking to the 4th Recon Bn Company that you want to join. You can find them online, google 4th Recon. They should be able to tell you all about it. Also the Marinecorpstimes recently had a story about 10,000$ bonus's for AD to go Reserve. If your pretty fit and mature you should have no problem. I believe your background will help you a lot. One pointer though turn yourself into a PT and Swim stud before you show up to try out. And another option is the National Guard Special Forces. I know a ton of former Marines in NGSF.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I actually looked into NGSF and am still not sure what im going to do yet.

There is a NG SF Company in California near San Diego and there is 4th Force Reconnaissance Company in Alameda, CA which is near San Francisco.

http://www.marforres.usmc.mil/4thmardiv/4thForceRecon/

Of course, this is all based upon if you want to move back to CA.

We do have quite a few Marines in our NG SF Company. I have two on my team with one of them being a 8654 in Oki whose now a 18C.

I was in 4th Force Recon in Hawaii out of high school - back on Peltier. One of our guys went through the 18C course as a Marine. I later joined active Army and got 18C. There were more than a few Marines that did the same thing and we had four or five former Force guys in my battalion. Looks like if you want a certain 18 mos, NG is the way to go.

FYI. Currently 4th Force has about 6 boat spaces available for 0321 Marines who wish to transfer from active to the reserve side. As of now there are now plans to send non 0321s to BRC. The only opportunities available at 4th Force is the Anti-Terrorsim BN. Considering that the BN is sort of brand new they are looking for some bodies, particularly 03s. If you're interested, speak to your prior service recruiter. But one caveat to keep in mind is that once you're over there at AT BN, 1st SGT Brown, the I&I 1st SGT, will NOT let you go just because you want a seat at BRC. Keep that in mind. If I were you, I would try obtaining a reenlistment contract to BRC. Talk to your career planner bout that.

When I was with 4th Force the TO was for three platoons. A new join would simply sign up to the unit if your MOS was 03 or 06 you were given the option of going to the RIP. It could take 2 months to 2 years depending on the INCDOC cycle or based on the cadre's recommendation for you to be sent to BRC or ARS. At the time we had 12 - 15 operators so opportunities abound for motivated individuals looking to start the school progression. Granted this was from 1999 to 2003 so I am sure things have changed a bit.

I have been out of the loop for a long time what is the Anti-Terrorism BN?

From what I understand the battalion is a new concept. I guess they're suppose to act as a supporting role to 4th Force, kind of like a trailer platoon, if you know what I mean. There isn't a formal operation profile for the AT BN yet, and the TO/E hasn't exactly been clarified either. This is according to 1st SGT Brown by the way. As of now the Marines there are assuming the role of Security Forces. The AT BN is infantry oriented, therefore holding an 03 MOS or qualifying as an 03 is relevant.

Which for me personally, would be a pretty unfulfilling gig (or not so much the job -- but being in a Recon Bn and being assigned to that job)....

Anti Terrorism Bn actually isn't that new, AD infantry battalions rotated duty as AT Bn as part of 4th MEB(AT) after 9/11. In 2005 or so, they stood up a separate battalion to perform the role. It was essentially a deployable Security Forces battalion that could beef up security at certain installations. For instance, in 2002-3, companies from the designated AT Bn rotated through the US Embassy in Kabul. As SOTB said, it was very similar to FAST, which is perhaps why the CMC decided to reflag the active duty AT Bn as 2/9 and move that capability to the reserve component. I don't see much need for 4th Force to have a company of dedicated "trailers", I imagine that grew out of the unit leadership and I&I staff searching for a mission.

alnakhla
11 June 2010, 16:03
VMI_Marine,

I didn't realize the AT BN has been around for several years. And I also agree with you about the need for trailers at 4th Force. This idea most definitely came from the imaginations of the I&I staff. And can tell you for a fact that the Marines at the AT BN are doing absolutely nothing. They do formations three times a day during drill and that's about it, sometimes they'll throw a PT session. 3 Marines were already ADSEPd. The most recent one was a non 03 who was stationed at K-bay. He just left AD and wanted to stay in Hawaii. He joined the unit on the reserve side and was sent to SOI Pendleton to attend ITB to qualify as a grunt. This guy ended up beating the shit out some boot in his training CO. He beat him so bad that the kid had to be rushed to the Naval Hospital on main side. SGTMAJ Manriques at 4th Force got an unpleasant phone call from SGTMAJ Vines, SOI West SGTMAJ, about the incident. If anyone here ever met SGTMAJ Vines, you'd know not to piss him off. So as of now, the AT BN has a bit tarnished rep because these clowns, and unfortunately, the opportunities for BRC has sort been closed for motivated Marines. A few rotten apples do spoil the whole barrel.

I'm really having a hard time understanding how you, who started the dick measuring, think that you can attempt to caution a Moderator about slapping dicks around. It would have taken very little effort on your part to learn your surroundings for you to find out that RAT is a long standing, well respected member of this board, not to mention the moderator of this forum. It's not possible to make me feel bad. Old maybe but that happens anyway when I sup with you young whippersnappers in Tx. or see flicks of myself with guys who have served within the last 10 years. At 60 I still possess the mindset of the 20 year old kid who booked down high speed trails in Nam but after the last bike wreck I am officially over the hill. I can no longer out work three men. It's down to two. Instead of hitting a dude 10 times and jumping back watching 9 land I only get to watch 5. Yep, grandpa is on the downhill slide.

Oh I know you werent being mean. It's just like an Old Salt Dog Named Sorrels told me some years ago. Real Marines don't show Nutz, because real Marines know they have them.
I think some guys just need to pull a stop check before they hit that activate button and create thier account. Figure out what they are looking for in here.I have'nt been here long but it's obvious that this is the internet, but in reality in a way it functions like unit mentality. If your checking ito a new unit the last thing you do is go in showing your ass, and talking about how bad ass you last unit was. Or a bigger fish is going to very quickly clip your fins and show you the door.
Everyone knows that, and that guy obviously was a rock or had his B.H.U. all adrift.

Yep.

I also think it went deeper than that. He was in the wrong. He was reminded to fix that wrong. It didn't matter who told him about it, he was wrong. The fact that he thought he could talk smack to Rat, a Mod and BTDT, made it even worse.

This dude assumed Rat was a nobody and thought that justified telling him to screw off after he was reminded he had failed to comply with the rules.

I used to tell my NCO's, SNCO's and Officers, that if they didn't want to get corrected by someone junior to them or someone who was in the unit for less time, then don't show your ass.

This dude obviously never received that information.

Hello,

Well I guess this where I post an intro. Some gents over at the USMC forum were complaining that I didn't introduce myself, for that I apologize for evading an introduction. To keep it sweet and simple I enlisted in the Corps in 2002. I was stationed at 1st Marine Regiment at camp Horno in Pendleton. I was assaigned to 1st BN 4th Marines Alfa Raider Co. Deployed to Iraq in OIF-I and later OIF-II during Najaf. After the battalion's 13th MEU deployment in 2005 I re-enlisted and went to RTP. After getting my ass kicked at RTP I went to BRC and got my ass kicked some more. I continued to get my ass kicked while at 1st Reconnaissance Battalion at Camp Marguerita in Pendleton. I just EASd from active duty and I am now at 4th Force Reconnaissance Co at Kaneohe Bay Hawaii.

FWIW, something is fishy here. Nobody spells Alpha "Alfa" Raider and the BN pumped w/ 11th MEU in 06. 1/4 was also just getting back from Iraq in 05, also w/ 11th MEU. So, there is no way he pumped w/ 13th MEU while in 1/4 during 2005. And as stated, his SA sucks.
