View Full Version : This may get people fired up, but what about a DM?

DM as Designated Marksman. Kinda like the guy in the movie Navy SEALS. Call sign "GOD" Now I know that was just a movie, but wouldn't it make sense to have a DM armed with a .308 AR-10, SR-25 etc to provide precise cover fire? In places like Somalia, and other MOUT situations, it seems it would be a good idea. Having an unseen man or team(s) that could cover you from high ground would be nice. I mean, you can have your 203 man lay out 40mm HE on the target, but now it's not like a free fire zone. PC and all that politics. If there is one crazy guy in a building with a machine gun, there's no sense to be spraying the area and HOPING to hit something. Maybe this wouldn't be possible, but anything to help us make it home alive...

The Marine Corps has printed the 'X' file on the designated Marksmanship program, after exhaustive experimentations by the Warfighting Lab. The final result. DM's will use an M-16 with a 4x scope, to provide
fire in support of the Infantry Squad.
For further info, and to view these X-files got to:

Same in the Bundeswehr,
We have a sniper with a G3/ZF also with a 4x scope. Gunny, how good can you snipe with the M -16 ? Not that i don't like the m -16, but the G3/ZF are special G3 that showed good performance during a test + the .308 bullet. Does America do the same thing with the M - 16?

Repp: The M-16 is accurate to 600 meters. That is the WEAPob is that accurate. The shooter behind it however....
I fired the G-3 quit alot while an advisor to the Saudi Marine Forces. (they also use the G-3). Grat weapon. I prefer a 7.62 over the 5.56. I did not, however, like the srequirement for a site tool, to adjust the sites.
The concept of the Designated Marksman is worht looking at. It does not try to replace the Sniper, or assume any of the Snipers missions on the battle field. Try the link in the previous posts.

I never meant that a DM could, should or would replace the sniper. Their roles are so different. Take a man or two that qualifies expert and set him up with a match grade AR or M-16. I can reliably take 500m shots with said match AR on 'chucks. The idea is to possibly take out heavy weapons crew or rocket team if a platoon comes in contact. Like I said, just an idea.

The idea of the DM is to provide that manuever element (the rifle squad or platoon) with the capability to engage those crew served weapons, etc. with accurate fire from the M-16 with scope, at max efective range. He is part of the manuever element, and immediately available. Much as describe in the previous post by Riley.
Semper Fidelis, and happy 225th Marines. Good night Chesty...where ever you are...

When I was in FAST & in Mogadishu our R&S element was armed with both the DMR M-14 with a 6 power scope plus we also had 2 M-40A1 Sniper rifles for the 2 school trained snipers to include myself. We also had the KN205 SIMRAD with only the mounts for the DMR. I have heard that they have or were getting more M-40's to add to the DMRs. When I left some of the DMRs had received 10x unertl scopers.
