I know this post doesn't belong here, but just to let y'all know who didn't already know, they (Hollywood) are coming out with a new movie "Enemy at the Gates". It's supposed to depict the duel between Zaitsev and Koning in Stalingrad I think. Anyways, Ed Harris is in it and I think he's supposed to be Koning with Jude Law as Zaitsev.

I saw the preview's for it to. Look's good.

One question thought. What the hell is that thing Zaitsev has over his scope/head? Look's like it would be handy for hiding lens flash.

Tut, I'm not too sure....I just hope Hollywood doesn't screw up the movie to make more money like it usually does.

The story of the sniper battle at stalingrad is pretty much legendary. I can't see how they could butcher the story. Granted it will be dramitized but what war movie isn't.

I'm told that the movie is based on the book "War of the Rats", by David L. Robbins. If so, it should be excellent. Let me be the first to recommend the book.

I guess it's based on the book "War of the Rats", since that is a semi-fictional story with a lot of love and feelings.

If you are really interested in what it was like, without all of the Hollywood stuff, you should read the book that War of the Rats was based on, called - guess what - "Enemy at the Gates -the battle for Stalingrad", by William Craig. This is an excellent book, a work of reference. It is based on an overwhelming number of interviews with survivors of the battle, on both sides and of all rank levels. It also has some nice photos, showing things as they were (Zaitsev wasn't really all that handsome). Also a couple of nice shots of early HTI - Russian single-shot 14,5mm anti-tank rifles.

This book is a bit hard to get hold of - I got it through Amazon's out-of-print service - but it's definately worth the wait if you like well written non-fiction about one of the toughest battles ever.

The William Craig book is back in print as a trade (oversize) paperback due to the publicity from the film. I saw several at a Books-a-Million just the other day.

War of the Rats...or Rattenkrieg.. If you like that check out "Stalingrad" by Antony Beevor, published by Peguin.

Good movie. However I think it was a great advertisement on why women should NOT be in Infantry units. I think he missed the German twice because he was to busy suckin' face with the chick!
