Not true. All enlisted Marine recruits go to boot camp at San Diego or Parris Island. All officer candidates go to OCS at Quantico, Virginia.

The only Marines that I know that go through BUD/S are Former Marines.

to JSOC, only officer candidates who were not Naval Academy graduates or PLC go to OCS. Then everyone go to the Basic School.

If you were Academy or PLC, you are not an officer candidate. You are an officer.

Whats a PLC?

To PN

Maybe just a mis communication, but a person in PLC is not an officer. PLC is a method by which a person attends OCS, similar to OCC. PLC can be either two 6 week courses or one 10 week course. You are not commisioned an officer until you finish PLC. Same with OCC.

Jack is right of course.

Look kids, this is what happens when you pop the clutch on your mouth before ramping up the RPM upstairs.

PLC is the Platoon Leader's Course. You attend summer camp at OCS while in college and become a commissioned officer upon completion of the program.

To Jack Ryan,
Are you still at VMI? I gather the largest source of commissioning officers for the USMC are: Texas A&M; Citadel; VMI; and Norwich, right?

Jack Ryan

Mike,

No, I am not still at VMI. I graduated back in '95.

Are you very familiar with the Instiute?

Anyone been through the PLC? Whats it like?
I'm maybe looking at that, if I ETS and go back to Ole Miss to get my BS. Sounds like a better deal than becoming a Middy with the NROTC Batt.

Is an officer candidate someone just in OCS, or someone who has graduated OCS?

Snake, you're thinking of becoming a Marine? I'm sure your old man in-law will love that one.

Where have you been, BTW?

-pn

(I would do NROTC)

To Jack Ryan, I went to Goshen Scout Camp near Lexington and visited VMI a few times. The Marshall Museum is an excellent place to visit, as well as walking on the well-manicured parade ground.

To Snake,
try the NROTC. You can get both a BS and NROTC. Why did you say that it is a better deal than NROTC? PLC is like 2 summers while ROTC is 2-3 times a week for 4 years, depending on which scholarship you signed up for (and awarded). Plus, there is the Semper Fidelis Society associated with most of the Marine-option Naval ROTC.

RKW,

An officer candidate is someone currently in OCS. Upon successful completion of OCS the candidate is offered a commision. He can either accept it or go on his way with no obligation to the Corps.

Pn: HE hasnt been consulted. As for where I've been, been in Korea for a few weeks, got back about 96 hrs ago. Managed to check in through my worldnet account. Is it me, or is Korea going downhill economy-wise? Everywhere we went had that "post-urban", kinda "Glasgow" look to it.

Mike: I did 1 semester at Ole Miss, as a NROTC Marine-option Middy. Guyton Hall is a fun place. But the "off-the-books" time investment NROTC requires is outrageous. I once calculated that the average 4/c Middy spent 18-20 hrs on NROTC activities, per week. That aint including the classes. A lot of what we did was, "show up at the Billiard Club, proceed with drinking", kind of stuff. The MOI, Major D****, was carried out of the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, after about 12 Blue Hawaiians.
Good times, but a major investment of time. I'm going for an Electrical Engineering degree. I can afford a 10 week summer program, but not the interferance with my regular classes. Plus, every thursday, we'd see the Army ROTC cadets run out to the Range to fire, while we had the 305th "Ethics/sexual harrasment/tolerance/toilet training" class of the semester. Plus, the cotton/poly khaki's drove me nuts, look like frigging UPS. And the winter "Waffen SS" blues are right out too. Those things are impossible to keep clean...

'k, enough moaning.

So Snake, does the time investment you had to make give you a better understanding of the 24/7 investment made by the engineer students at the academies? There were far too many 0200 and 0300 nights trying to complete schoolwork that got pushes to the side due to a host of other time sucks (none of which included hitting the local bar, btw).

Razor,
oooohh yeah, I can safely concieve of just the level of dedication it takes to go for a Technical Degree. My problem was, I was trying to keep up with people (socially) that didnt have an Engineer curriculum to deal with. So when my buddy Jimmy calls up at 2100, wanting me to hit the Gin with him, it can be hard to demure. However, Jimmy is a Theatre major, so he can do that. If I go back, I'm on the Wagon for the duration. Back to Cider, away from the Finlandia and Raisin Jack. I'll maybe go interview with the NROTC batt, and see if anythings changed.
