Do I need to get a special scope to handle the recoil of the .50 BMG? I might get a Christensen Carbon Ranger sometime in the next year, and wondered. Thanks.

Hi Jesse;
Best bet would be the Leupold MK4 M1 in 16X it will stand up to the recoil of the .50. Strange as it may sound but the .50 rifle's recoil is like a BB gun...not the force but the action. You get the initial recoil followed by a forward pull from the muzzle break, this is what breaks scopes being shook back then forward. The Leupold handles this very well, I've used one on my Haskins for several years and it still keeps working. It also repeats it's come ups and windage when changed and returned, something some do not.
Other optics I've heard, but not used, of for the .50 include the Swarovsky, and US Optics...both big dollar items. You might try to get a hold of T50 he may know of others.
Take care...Jim

T50 recomended the same Leupold (on another board). Great minds think alike, I guess. I have an uncle who shot one with a night vision scope (he could have bought it for $3,000 as a set, but he thinks it was stolen from the Army, and he didn't want to get cought). He told me that the gun kind of pushed toward him for a long time, but not very hard, like it would have moved a long distance very slowly, compaired to a lighter rifle, which moves short and fast.

Upon further research I have come across another manufacturer. I will now most likely get the State Arms Rebel (http://www.statearms.com/rebel.htm),or Bertha (http://www.statearms.com/bertha.htm). Either of them are easily $1500 less, which will most likely add to the price of the scope. I am leaning toward the Rebel, because I like the simple design. Does anyone have any coments on these rifles?

Guys, I have been messing with the 50's for several years. I have not used a State Arms but I have played with them. They seem very well made.
I have a great deal of experience with the Barretts and truly love them. My favorite is the new Army XM107 take down. The Model 99 Barrett is about 2600.00 and very nice.
Also the McBros Navy Pattern weapon is very good but 4000.00 plus.
On scopes the MK4 16x or a Nighforce NXS Series will work very well. Dont use the none NXS Series Nightforce for sniping or 50's.
