View Full Version : Sock advice

I'm putting together a box of things for my sons upcoming deployment and want to throw in a few pairs of high quality socks. He's an 0311 so comfort and durability (he's hard on equipment) are the 2 critical factors. Since I'm putting all of this together under his radar, what colors are acceptable for him to wear in uniform?
I feel strange asking for advice about a sock purchase, but appreciate being able to tap the experience of the guys here who are the SMEs.
Thanks in advance
Take a look at Thorlo Boot Socks.
Another item I'd recommend is New Balance Insoles for Running or Walking (Model 780?). Take out the isse inserts and replace with the NB model.
I used both in the issue Marine Boots, in Iraq, last year to great effect.
Walking gait will affect performance. He should be walking quietly at all times, no shuffling or stomping heard.
Brown or Tan is a good 'neutral color'. Mileage will vary based on the Chain of Command...
Heard great things about these socks. http://www.point6.com/home Wool is great!!! Used to wear smartwool but my older smartwool socks are outlasting my new smartwool socks so I think they might have changed the process to make there socks and they aren't as nice as they used to be.

Actually, the website you want is socknet.
Sorry, everyone, I just had to.
Anyway, just so all is not lost here, I have used Thorlos for many years, and swear by them.
They should be soft on the inside to prevent friction burns during heavy use, and not to expensive so he can just throw them away when they're full. The laundry doesn't appreciate getting combat socks, and you probably don't want to wear them again anyway.

Well worth the price of the keyboard I just soaked in coffee.

I have no intention of financing a fifi, but thank you sir.
Looks like the the Thorlo socks get the nod. I'll be looking for those inserts as well. I believe he's getting new boots so it should be perfect timing. Sincere thanks for the help and guidance.

Bridgedale Trekker socks, and I'll add to the insole recommendation and mention Sorbothane Double Strike insoles. Both items are a little expensive, and I don't know if they're easily available outside of the UK, but are excellent products.
The socks are the right level of thickness in my opinion - provide ample cushioning, without being so thick as to cook your feet, plus they're seamless and not too long, and the shock absorption properties of the insoles certainly help combat the stresses of being on your feet for extended periods of time. The socks currently come in grey, but surely this is irrelevant, as they'll be beneath his boots, and if his chain of command are worrying about the colour of his socks, then something is seriously wrong...
I swear by both, and have genuinely done serious mileage in them.

I second Thorlo's and would add Fox River. I used both of these during SFAS as was very pleased. Personally I'd stay away form 5.11 socks. IMO they are a loser.

Only because the 5.11 sock lord sensed you were not tacticool enough...:biggrin:
Seriously, I agree completely. Thorlo's are great and 5.11's pretty much suck.
Not advice for a brand, but quantity. IMO, the best sock was always one that was clean & dry. Probably took 20-25 pairs of socks on my last deployment.

Had a former group dude at IOBC tell me about the REI Merino Wool socks. I have since bought serveral pair, light and medium weight. They are awesome. I highly recommend them.

I picked him up 10 pairs of the Thorlo Combat Boot socks. I figured that would be enough to get him started. He may not take them all with him when he leaves, but I can supplement additional pairs in care packages during the deployment period.
Thanks again for the assistance and recommendations.

Wool dive socks...
Are you out of your fucking mind? Dive socks are like UDT shorts. Ok for standing around in but absolutely useless otherwise.
And yes, I wore both all the damn time.
Sandy crotch and blistered feet...........Good times.
