First off I hate Star Alliance and most of the associated airlines. Notwithstanding, I'll be flying Austrian Air across the pond in about two weeks. I have an upgradeable ticket and 25,000 mi in my star alliance account.
The guys here are saying that they have never been able to get Austrian Air to honor their star alliance accounts and upgrade them to first class. Does anyone here have experience with this airlines, or know the secret phrase to drop?

Here is my experience with them. Different situation. My flight was from Dubai-Vienna-Rome. On my return I had the same itinerary in reverse. When I arrived in Vienna there was about a 1.5 hour layover.
When we boarded it was rather light and first class had about 3 seats open. I sat down and then asked about an in-flight upgrade. I end up paying about 500 Euro to go from Vienna to Dubai.
Maybe it's a hit or miss thing?

For being an Airline of a country with big people. They have smallest/worst leg room in Economy. I had to fly on them many times on company paid tickets for 10 hours BKK-Vienna, and it sucked bad.
I won't fly on them if I can avoid it.

Ask that question over at www.flyertalk.com (http://www.flyertalk.com) and you will likely have an answer in an hour.

I fly them to Vienna all the time becasue it's the quickest route for me.
From the US to Europe they usually don't have a true first class. The use a combined business/first like Delta does. They will upgrade you but it takes some pre planning unless the flight isn't that full. I do it every time.
Their planes are older and the seats can be uncomfortable. They do fly on time so you can count on that. Most of the flight attendants are younger instead of like the US based carriers who use old big boned ladies.
No need to go to another website for info like this.

Update: I went to check in online and was asked if I wanted to upgrade to Business class for 499 Euro. Sucks not being able to use my miles, but better than economy.

Really, will have to checkin online than!! Was that for roundtrip or just the trip over the ocean? And yes they are hot. It is so much nicer getting on the plane from Erbil than getting on to RJ!!

I'm currently working in Kabul with my company paying a stipend for me to fly home on my breaks now instead of getting the company Y class ticket. I'm looking at traveling from Dubai to Atlanta in the most comfortable airline, and bang for my bucks...I got about 2500 to spend...any hints or tips ??? I know biz class will cost over what I got...so I'm all ears. I'm tired of doing Delta Dubai to ATL being stuffed in the back ... Economy plus or Biz...what is the best ?
Thanks for the help. I know we got many world class travelers here.

Economy plus vs. Business are not even in the same book:cool: Get treated like a human, go business. What about miles programs? Delta is generally 25,000 for an upgrade vs. United's 10,000.

I have not flown in business class AUA yet, but in general , I have had the best food on AUA planes.
My High commander used her miles&more to book a flight to AMS a while ago and didnt have any issues, though of course her card was a originally AUA issued card.
AUA was bought up by Lufthansa a while ago and are very unprofitable at the moment, so expect AUA to be a carbon copy of Lufthansa and their service anytime soon as part of cuts etc to try and make them profitable.
I recently flew VIE-PRG and the Fokker 70 with about 100 seats had all of 15 people in it including cabin crew.Cant make money like that.
