What are job prospects like for Navy EOD techs after they leave active service?
Are there civillian contractors hiring them once they leave?

There are tons of opportunities in the civilian UXO field. The money is great, but the lifestyle is rough if you have family. If you want to see how wide open the field is, check out the National Association of Ordnance and Explosive Waste Contractors' website. In addition the Navy techs are able to due the UXO diving work, while it doesn't pay as lucratively as some commercial diving the money is nothing to laugh at.
Well my experience has shown me that EOD is one seriously good career for civilian work. If you want to do Law Enforcement and have a degree, the ATF, DEA, FBI, and Secret Service all look favorably on hiring EOD techs (as long as you have a CLEAN history)
Local Police also have Bomb units always looking for talent. (usually two years of beat cop before the switch over to Bomb Squad)
Other job opportunities in the civilian EOD field exist and as Felix mentioned, pay rather well.
I know of some people who do pyro work for theme parks or touring rock bands if that your bag.
Me personally? After I get out I'm looking to open a Hooters in Perth, vacation in Pattaya and Bali, and maybe do occasional "trips" over to South Africa.....
or become a gigolo.
