Hey,

If someone who is a tech can answer this it would be greatly appreciated. I was wondering how someone becomes a Marine Mammal Handler after becoming a tech? Does someone volunteer or are they just assigned? If they volunteer are they usually picked? It says that this is a first tour option on the community manager.

One more thing: Why is this duty for EOD after all the training in demolitions?

Currently all of our mammals are at one unit. If you choose to go to that unit out of school then you can request to do the mammal thing once you check in to the command. Everybody I know who wanted to work mammals has been afforded the opportunity at some point in their career.

As far as your next question goes, I am a bit confussed. Demolition is so inter-twined in EOD work that you couldn't do most EOD tasks with out it. Demolition skills are kinda like surgical skills to a doctor- it enables us to "operate".

BMF, Don't forget the DMT route. HM has to be different. Aren't those guys still afforded the chance for vet assistance?

Thanks for the reply BMF. What I meant was why is Mammal Handling an EOD task? It sounds cool to me, but what does explosives have to do with that? Thanks!

By the way: The other day I saw where someone had posted that HM was now an EOD rating. Is this true? I don't think it is, but that's just what I read somewhere, it wasn't an official Navy site.

Well we use the mammals to do a mission. The mission they do is EOD related.
