View Full Version : TAR enlistment, EOD??? (BMF Please Help)
Hey people,
I am stumped right now. I am considering enlisting under the TAR option for the Navy. ON bupers.navy.mil on the community managers I checked and under EOD it says that EOD is not Open to TARs. But the other day I talked to a Tech that was a TAR with Mobile Unit 17(???), and he assured me that EOD could be done under the TAR enlistment. BMF: DO you know about this? Could you find out for me?
Thanks..
I don't know jack shit about the TAR side of the house. I'll ask around and see if I can't dig up some info.
E-mail the community manager for EOD (Senior Chief Marshall) and ask him for the hook up.
In my opinion active is the only way to go.
Hey Man,
Thanks for the reply. I would be on active, but just with a reserve unit. That option rocks if you have a family or just a wife. It's a pretty good program from what I've seen. You still go to sea, but not as long periods of time. Plus, it gives leadership opportunity earlier in your career. I would be one of the few active duty sailors with on the premises.

There are no TAR or reserve Techs. The command is run by Active duty guys on Sea Duty. The CO, XO and CMC are Techs as well as a handfull of other billets in the command. There are TAR billets at Reserve EOD units but they are support.
Any Techs that are in the Reserves don't function as Techs. The EOD Reserve units have a different mission than the Mobile units.

That is horseshit. When EOD qualed guys get out and go the reserve route, they serve and do EOD functions. In fact at EODMU7 they in fact are some of the busiest reservists I know. The active side relies heavily on there support. As far as TAR's go, it is a support function. Going active EOD first then reserve is the way to go.
DFC you are as tactful as an anal herpe.
The EOD reserve units do have a somewhat different mission than a regular active duty Mobile Unit. If a tech gets out and stays as a reservist he can continue to function as an EOD tech although he won't do the kinds of things active techs are doing (cruises, ODA support, JTF missions etc).
As I said in my previous post, I believe active is the wat to go.
Just my $.02 .
DFC,
What I said is based on my friends that got out and went reserve at 17. What makes a Tech a Tech is doing RSP's. Unless I'm mistaken, Reserves don't have this mission. If you can keep current, good for you. This isn't a bust on you or any of the Reserve personnel, it's just the mission area.
If you are on an MCM team there's a lot of areas that you might try and stay current in, that doesn't mean that is your mission area.

My chiefeenesss I did say that(at the end of my post) that active EOD was the way to go then reserve if active was enough. The deal I was shitting out was from a bud of mine at 7. He very well could be full of caca. Since I'm not EOD, I very well could be a herpe of the anal order and will leave very well alone...love you guys though http://www.socnetcentral.com/ubboard/biggrin.gif
Nuthin wrong with anal herpes....got a few myself.
I think you two love birds have either come to terms or scared the poor lad away. Either way brings a tear to my eye....

I'm still here. I guess I'm going to look for another rating for the TAR community. If I go regular reserve after my four years are up I may attempt to get NEC 5339 (I think that's what it is), anyway its an ordnance saturation diver or something, similar to EOD... Thanks for the answers BMF.
