Hello,

I am headed to Greenville on a business trip, and have never been in the area before.

Are there any good outdoors activities to partake in here? Kayaking, Climbing, Hiking, etc?

I did try google by the way, and didn't come up with too much.

Thanks

Chimney Rock in about 70 miles from there. Very nice.

Short of that, check out the new revitalized downtown with the curved suspension pedestrian bridge. Neat.

2 hours away by car is the tourist town Helen, GA - should be right in the middle of Oktoberfest. Make a good weekend getaway. Look it up.

The Appalachian trail is in Helen, too. Blood Mountain is just north of there. I don't know if they allow civilians up on Mt. Yonah (where the Rangers train) anymore. They used to - it's between Cleveland and Helen, GA.

Tons of old mine shafts and such to rappel down into, but I can only walk to them (provided my memory would even work after 20 years).

Helen IS in the middle of Octoberfest, but mostly attended by old retired folks...

Helen is also very close to a number of good streams for trout fishing...

I have fished with these guys: www unicoioutfitters com and caught some pigs...

A couple of Revolutionary War battlefields within an easy drive--Cowpens and Kings Mountain. Crowder Mountain State Park is near Kings Mountain, good for hiking and rock climbing, and the National Whitewater Center is a little further up 85 just before Charlotte. And if you keep going up 85, you'll run into Scotty and Tyr and eventually me :D. We're really the regional beer/welcome center.

Screw all that, get into the South Cackolacki culture. Play video poker at the local dive.

Go Gamecocks!

A long time ago I competed in a karate tournament in Greenville. Since then, my Greenville activities have amounted to -- at most -- buying gas on the way through....

Raven Falls 420ft and a decent hike, http://www.alleneasler.com/raven.html

Paris Mountain State Park is even closer, http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/park-finder/state-park/722.aspx

BMW Performance center, a little pricey but they do have a slot open this weekend, http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Content/Experience/Events/PDS/Schedule.aspx

Go to Asheville about an hour north. Anything you could want to do up there. Hiking and biking all over Pisgah NF and Brevard, and as far as kayaking your right next to the Green river narrows. Awesome beer there too. Get yourself a Pisgah pale ale or anything from Highlands brewing if you have chance.

I wish I was home. Some of the best Micro brews you'll ever have are made in WNC.

I used to guide around Brevard and Saluda NC. There is some awesome mtn biking, kayaking and climbing and hiking just north of the up state.;)

I love Greenville.

I live here, well, 20 miles from Greenville. There is A LOT to do if you know where to find it. I moved here 5 years ago and am still finding things. There is a TON Of history here. If you are interested in that.. Cowpens Revolutionary War battlefield is only 20 minutes from Greenville (North on 26).

Going a little southeast about 35 miles on 385 you can visit Musgrove Mill Revolutionary War Battleground. About 60 miles away there is Ninety Six Revolutionary War Battleground. There wasn't much Civil War stuff up here except for people leaving for it. The closest Civil War stuff is in Columbia about 1 1/2 hr away east.

There are hiking trails on Roper Mountain here in Greenville.. Paris Mountain has an old gold mine on top of it.. nice hiking. There's also the "Tunnel to nowhere" at the base (so people tell me). Because this area is the literal "foothills" of the Appalachians you can find hiking all over. I know there's quite a bit of canoe'ing and Kyaking too but I do know know any specifics since I dont partake in these activities. I do know there is some white water rafting up into North Carolina on some of the creeks outside and just a little north of Franklin NC (about an hour or so away).

Downtown Greenville's beauty is just jaw dropping.. You will NOT forget walking down Main street.. not like any you've seen. Do a Google map on it and then slide to street level view. Go past the Bi-Lo center to Main .. Gives you an idea.

My wife and I really dont get into "fine dining" unless you call that a trip to "Ryans Steakhouse". I WILL say that Jersey Mike's Sub shop down on Main has some AWESOME Food.. (Lunch). "The Mast General Store" is also on main, its an offshoot of the one that started in Asheville over 150 years ago. It has some NEAT Country Stuff. We DO have a "Chophouse 47" Steakhouse down between Simpsonville and Greenville.. the steaks there are to DIE FOR (could only afford to go there once.. LOL).

Here are some pictures I found besides what you can see doing a street level view. Some of the highest buildings are here in this city... but its different than any other city, anywhere. We LOVE it here.. like living in paradise. I believe down on the 2n or 3rd block is where The Mast General Store has an outlet (that I was talking about). COOL Store..
