I was checking out the Tough Mudder run and saw that one of the sponsors was Progenex. Their website looked good and made sense. I have two questions:

1) Has anybody used the protien ie recovery and muscle growth and what were the results.

2) Regarding the recovery, the research I have seen ref the 30 minute "anabolic window" usually states to use a 3-1 Carb to Protien ratio for best results, but the recovery product from Progenex has little to no Carbs. Thoughts on a recovery product without carbs.

Thanks

I take a few scoops of hydrolyzed whey protein after I work out, it definitely helps with the muscle fatigue and soreness so I have to assume its good for my muscles. As far as the carbs, eh, who knows. My shoes may not fit your feet, so you have to try them on yourself.

As was told to me by, "Coach wrinkle balls", the strength coach at 1/75, you need carbs to assimilate protein into your body. In addition, he went on to say that the body can only ingest so much protein at one time, about 30-40 grms. So people who ingest ungawdly amounts are just pissing money out of their ummm....well you get it.

ETA: You need to get protein, preferably in liquid form, in your system within 60 min after the activity. All this information should be taken with the caveat that this information in 7 yrs old. New studies are produced all the time which refute older information. Just think if we were still back in the '70's of body science. However, on the other foot, companies are trying to sell a product. So they may twist truths or tell half truths to get you to buy their product. Caveat emptor.

I have not used Progenex but do agree that a 3 to 1 ratio of carbs to protein is optimal for recovery. Here is a great article to read that will explain why, as well as a number of things associated to recovery: http://www.hammernutrition.com/knowledge/recovery-a-crucial-component-for-athletic-success.1278.html?sect=advanced-knowledge-section

Carbs as well as solid post work out nutrition is a must to avoid catabolism, thats why the Anabolic Window is stressed because if you dont supply your body with the nutrients it needs it will go to your muscles for those nutrients which will lead to a lose of muscle tissue. Not only do you want carbs in the Anabolic window but amino acids as well.

Protein powder rich in amino acids mixed with dextrose and water is my personal post workout. Protein powder mixed with water absorbs fast. I put the dextrose in my mixture for my simple carb.

Its a lot of companies out there making false claims. So do your research on the products before you take them. A lot of the new products I don't trust but thats me personally. When it comes to post workout nutrition for your anabolic window you have a lot of options, just keep the basics in mind. Aminos, Simple Carbs, fast absorbtion.

I know this will piss alot of the guru's off, but you could drink chocolate milk and replace much of what you need.

Find a protein you like and your stomach can deal with and use it. Find a carb replacement you like and use it. The protein is for the recovery of your muscle tissue and growth,( if that is what you are after). The carbs are to replenish your energy expenditures. I know none of that is scientific language and it's not meant to be, but at the basic level that's what each is for. Obviously they tie together and offer mutual support, etc...

Some sources are better than others, but IMO too many people get wrapped around the axle on issues like this instead of finding what works for them, and making gains.

I'm a big believer in using the minimum needed to make gains, recover, etc... and ramping up as you get more experience and/or your body tells you it needs more calories, carbs, or whatever. Too many dudes jump into the full gamut of supplements and eating without ever learning what they really need and their body can use. The grocery store owners and supplement makers get rich off of this. Much of it is driven by false marketing and scientific studies done by dudes who never show any progress in the gym.

Good luck.

I drink Chocolate Milk post workout. It costs like $3 a gallon.

Regarding Progenex, its either an offshoot or has been re-branded from Met-Rx. I believe that they are targeting the Crossfit market as I have seen their advertisements at Crossfit events and on websites. One of the owners of the Crossfit gym I went to a few years ago has been profiled on the Progenex website. He is an honest guy and if he said it worked for him then I believe him, but I also believe that certain things work for some and dont work for others. Chocolate milk man, it works and its cheap.

Chocolate milk has been proven to be a great recovery product. Just make sure it is skim milk to avoid the sat fat/cholesterol.
This statement is pure gold: "Too many dudes jump into the full gamut of supplements and eating without ever learning what they really need and their body can use. The average healthy person can drink regular milk without worrying about fat and/or cholesterol.

+1 On Chocolate Milk! I never mention it because everytime I do an argument sparks. Same thing happens when I mention eating an apple or an orange pre-work out. As stated its all about learning and know your body.

SB said it best, use the minimums your body needs to make gains and recover. Great gains can be made with just a plan, proper nutrition, proper training and rest.

My opinion on using the minimum is that most guys get brainwashed about every "special" diet and/or supplement and never learn what is working and what isn't. That includes the amount of food as well.

Dr. Scott Connelly, MD is a Metabolic Physicist who knows what he is talking about. If he puts his name on something I would consider it a credible product.
