"The Road Not Taken"
I found this book review "The Road Not Taken",to be quite interesting in its look at how the CIA operative in Vietnam, Edward Lansdale, tried to make things happen in a covert way versus the methods used by the US military. As a Vietnam vet, myself, I have often read this or that book about where things may have gone off the rails. "A Bright Shining Lie" by Neil Sheehan was one of the best and is referenced in the article. They are both good reads to get a feel for how counterinsurgency should work. John Paul Van, the main character in Sheehan's book, was firmly against the free fire zones installed in the countryside as being counterproductive in winning the hearts and minds of the civilian populace.
