2d Lt. John P. Bobo, USMC - Posthumous Medal of Honor

"Of all my accomplishments I may have achieved during the war, I am proudest of the fact that I never lost a wingman.

- Colonel Erich 'Bubi' Hartmann, GAF"

For fighter pilot, Wingman is a sacred duty. A fighter pilot who is not a true Wingman is worthless and in essence not a fighter pilot. 2 fighter pilot who fly excellent as wingman against 20 who do not, the 2 will win the day. Teamwork and skill and you will devour them all, individually, as they die alone with no protection. And in the end, if all is lost, a Wingman will clear your '6' even as he knows the enemy that will kill him is completing his gun or missile solution.

Run and live and leave your Wingman alone- you may live more days on the earth. In your own brain and soul you are dead.

"When an exploding enemy mortar round severed 2d Lt. Bobo's right leg below the knee, he refused to be evacuated and insisted upon being placed in a firing position to cover the movement of the command group to a better location. With a web belt around his leg serving as a tourniquet and with his leg jammed into the dirt to curtail the bleeding, he remained in this position and delivered devastating fire into the ranks of the enemy attempting to overrun the Marines."

2d Lt. Bobo was not a fighter pilot (and it is the community of fighter pilot who is lessened by this). He was without doubt a Wingman, many times repeated.

Respectfully,
