We resuscitated a 20-something-year-old after almost 5 hours from hypothermic arrest. His core temp was 85 when we started. He was discharged about 10 days later. This was...2005? Maybe 2006.

Unless it's July in Arizona (for example), in which case the opposite is true....

That’s pretty amazing. There are documented cases of people being basically dead for many minutes or hours but that’s a long time. Of course, hypothermia always was the saving grace in those cases.

I resuscitated someone after being face down in water for over 4 minutes on a chilly May day once. No organ damage.

The mammalian diving reflex is thought to be the reason for the lack of anoxic brain damage. All metabolism slows down, and the body requires far less oxygen, entering a hypo metabolic scenario. This phenomenon was first observed when a Russian farmer broke through ice on his tractor and was fished out hours later. He supposedly was intact after warming.
