First long range shooting in a long time

Have a buddy that's going to Alaska on a moose hunt in Sep so he asked me to take him to the range for a zero/tune up session. We got zeros from 100 to 800 on his rifle and I shot mine for the first time in three years. Was really nice to do some long range stuff. Since I got out of the WPS game I sure do miss the long range teaching/shooting. Only sucky part was it was 90 degrees by 10oclock. Rather warm today.

Some of you may not believe this, but my 700 has had the same zero on it since 1994.

That's awesome, G! Having a convenient place to shoot distance is a very cool thing.

Virginia International Raceway has a 1000yd range that I can access for a nominal fee. It's about a two hour drive for me. I think next time I'm going to go in April or October, it was friggin steamy down there today.

Yeah I would NOT want to have been on the range the past week or two. Seems like I will be going next week though, but only for one day.

Shit man, we used to sit in it day after day in LR, but we were young and tough then. One day on Range 19 in July now would probably kill us both.

You're not kidding. Hathcock Range in July was brutal, especially running the yard lines.

That is no shit. I did a week of training just a couple of years ago with 4/160 and 2/75 and confirmed that I can still keep up but damn it hurts so much more than it used to. Kinda like that Toby Keith song.... I ain't as good as I once was... LOL

FWIW, I've shot my share of moose up here... longest shot was about 90 yards.

If you long range guys ever have the chance to go to FTW Ranch near Barksdale TX you won't be disappointed. Check youtube for Hill Country Rifles Longest Shot for a drone overview of one of their many ranges. Awesome place, staffed with quiet professionals.

Yeah, he's not expecting to have to go long. He's just being ready just in case. He's spending a lot of money on this hunt and he's just being OCD.

Drive two hours to me next time, I have a 1000 yard range and it's free, not to mention some decent crappie fishing when it's seasonal.

What do you have for targets? We went VIR mostly because it's a pits/butts system and that made for easy feedback for zeroing purposes.

You should ride down and we'll do a smallie trip on the New. I have a 17' jet boat that's the cats ass for the river.

For targets, mostly steel, I can round up the guys from Hawk Hill Customs to drop by to dope a few rifles--they have the way cool shit to play with. I'm like you, I don't shoot as much as I used to, still enjoy it from time to time...
