I know... our legal system's so jacked these days that I'm surprised he even got the other 20-ish counts though. Especially as a leaker.

Depends. If sentenced consecutively, he'd be looking at a possible 128 years, and have to serve 85+% of it. If sentenced concurrently, he could catch far less...but still have to serve the 85+% of it.

That always shocks our subjects when the judge lays out the sentence and they hear that they have to serve 16 years on a 20 year sentence...not the single digits they expected from prior state sentencings.

I just don't understand why sentencing isn't common sense:

10 years with possibility of Parole. That means that you serve 10 years. If you're really good you have the possibility of parole. That possibility cannot come before you've served 80% of your sentence, or after 8 years.

10 years without possibility of Parole. You serve 10 years. Period.

All sentencing should be up to 100 years. No one lives longer than 100 years. All crimes should fit under 100 years, either with or without the possibility of parole. The only exception is life. That means you stay in prison until they carry you out in a body bag.

Why does it have to be so fucking complex? "50 years each count for 100 counts" is just some nonsense kind of crap. At tht point why not just say "Life"?

Of course if most jails and prisons weren't filled to the brim and over capacity with petty drug charges we'd be able to have some semblance of a system that made sense.

I agree with the verdict, for what it's worth.

Knowingly aiding the enemy is a far cry from what his intentions were.

This whole mess has been a disaster not only from Manning's actions, but by the .gov response as well.

Everything we (.gov) did after the leak only made things worse.

+1 to this, though he did in fact act aid the enemy, but it would be very hard to establish that intention. He was just all about himself instead of the country he was lucky enough to serve.

As to the sentencing I am with kidA. It could be a lot more logical.

I would like to go on record as guessing that he will receive 35 years.

You could say any of the various media outlets can aid the enemy, or politics, or religion, but it's way too abstract.

Establishing a case for "aiding the enemy" needs to be linier or direct.

My line of thinking too.

Clayton Lonetree was originally sentenced to 30 years for espionage, later reduced to 15 and I think he ended up doing about 9. Different set of circumstances but I'm guessing the sentencing outcome will be about the same.

I agree, I don't think the media outlets are guilty of "aiding the enemy" as written in UCMJ either. All the other stuff he was found guilty of seems built on a solid ground from my outsiders perspective. I still wonder what happend to the SIO at the SCIF where this happened.

My bet for sentencing is 20-25 years BTW.

He and the media outlets did "aid the enemy" but so do a lot of other things. Like fat soldiers, or Justin Bieber.... but he isn't American.

Manning's sentence has been lowered to a maximum of 90 years. What the actual fuck. The defence can't progressively notch his punishment down, it was a pointless effort. His life is ruined and he'll die taking the red, white & blue weenie as well as his inmates'.

Because he only got 35 years, minus the 3 years already served, and the probable son of Fonda (treason runs in families, I hear) will be on the streets in 15 - 20.

He probably could have avoided prison altogether had he just released the videos. Sucks to be stupid.

8-10, actually.

If he were to stay the entire 35 years, I would be ok with that sentence. No way that 35 years at Fort L. wouldn't teach a lesson, and SEND a lesson to others.

PFCs are stupid.

I'm glad there was no internet when I was a PFC -- I would not have been a classified material risk, but Youtube would have likely crashed solely from my videoed stupidity....
