I agree, and the African Coast is spitting tropical waves like jelly beans right now. I think one of them is bound to make land contact...

Used to think they were cool as a kid growing up in Fl. Now I see them for what they are-- a big dice roll with personal property and infrastructure.

Living in the South for many years of my career, we were a couple hundred miles inland. Still, hurricanes were downgraded to TS status, but destructive. Had a close call with Hugo in Savanah. Power outages from Charlie, Ivan, T'S Allison and a couple others I can't remember.

I have always thought there was a correlation between an active/non active tropical season & how bad a winter would be.

Last two times I was in BZ in July, I was late for one and early for another.

In my AO it has been God awful humid, off and on since July. And no hurricanes to speak of...

I keep the NHC on speed dial, but haven't had to use it... yet!

13 years ago, Hurricane Charlie made a direct hit on us. No power/water for over two weeks and you realize that preparations for 'next time' are in order.

My dog, Charlie was conceived during that storm. Her parents (2 blocks away) were in cages when the roof blew of the house, busting the cages open.

Mother Nature can be a bitch.

Hurricane Georges direct hit on Key West in 1998. It was a weak category 3, strong 2, and the eye came right over us. Very unique experience.

No power for a week and a half. Nine months later I had a son

Did you name him 'George' by chance?

Lost two aircraft to the I-4 corridor Charlie in 2004 at KDAB (Daytona Beach); basically the wing tie downs broke and the winds whipped the DA-40s like Hulk did to Loki.

Saw the Beta of the predictive hurricane software at KEYW (Key West) in 2005, which forecast the Ophelia recurve.

Saw the aftermath of Wilma in 2005 in Broward county and the total destruction of KBCT's (Boca Raton) hangars; lot of expensive hardware was lost to that one (Hognose was with me and we took pictures, RIP bro).

I think they're 3 or 4 ramping up out in the Atlantic now...

I rode out Hurricane Lilly in '02. Sitting in the living room with sweat running down the crack of my ass...never again!

I have been through a couple living inland with no damage (knock on wood); Matthew and Fran come to mind right off. I have responded to aftermath with state SAR efforts and with the Navy (Katrina).

When I was young and (more) stupid I went to N Myrtle Beach and surfed right before Hugo.

The National Hurricane Center has updated the forecast for Harvey and it is expected to make landfall as a major hurricane (Cat 3 or better) with a hurricane warning in effect for Port Mansfield to Matagorda, TX with the track aiming for Corpus Christi.

All the data is available at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov.

Stay safe and be prepared if you're in the path.

I made reference to TS Allison in an earlier post. I was in N Ga when that occurred. It came up from the Gulf into central Ga. It sat and spun around a couple of days, went back out to the Gulf and gained strength & moisture. It ran right up through the same track the way it initially came causing lots of flood damage.

This system (Harvey) is doing something similar according to the weather folks. It's a slow mover with no other weather system to influence it's track.

You folks in Tx/La stay safe.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we are having the most moderate, comfortable weather of the summer.

Hi res image from GOES 16. Lots of hot towers and no dry air to attenuate strengthening. The source website for this and other hi res imagery is https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/GOES-16.
