Quick Army ROTC question

Oldest heads off to Advanced Camp at Ft Knox shortly.

Wife and I are figuring out the rest of the summer travel plans and it seems that there is a family day/graduation at the end.

Anyone have an info on whether this is a thing and worth attending?

Knox is a long way from New England. "Graduation" from ROTC advanced camp isn't much of an achievement to celebrate. Kinda like celebrating because a police academy cadet qualified on the pistol range.

If you lived in KY it might be a different thing. Look forward instead to the Commissioning ceremony next year. THAT's the achievement worthy of celebration.

ROTC Adv. Camp, Ft. Sill, 1970. Dad had a six-pack waiting for me when I got home. That meant far more to me than his attendance ever would have.

He did attend my Ranger School graduation, though, and that meant more to me than a six-pack.

Priorities.

Can confirm the "ceremony" at Lewis 15 years ago was not something worth attending.

Consists of a thousand or more cadets who just want to GTFO and head home. They haven't actually graduated from anything... they've simply completed a mandatory training event.

B 2/75 has the best response: "Consists of a thousand or more cadets who just want to GTFO and head home." I can't even remember my 'graduation' from Fort Lewis Advanced Camp in 1980, except that my car was packed and ready to go once we were released. When I commanded a training company at Fort Knox my ROTC Basic Camp experience was to essentially to march the cadets back from the parade field for a quick change of clothes and then board the waiting buses for the trip to the airport.

On the other hand, if you're just looking for a road trip, there are a few things to see in the area. It's worth the time to see the gold vault & Armor museum, visit Lincoln's birth place near Elizabethtown, pass through horse country around Lexington, and maybe do a distillery tour. Do that before the graduation because your Cadet will just want to get the hell out of Kentucky.

I completely concur...

Granted I "graduated" from advance camp over 25 years ago...

But all I remember about it was how silly and useless about 90% of what we did there was.. it was completely non reflective of the "real" army..

and how ready I was to spend an hour on the parade field, and get the hell out of there on graduation day and go back home..

advance camp was nothing more than checking a block back then and attending a mandatory event..

Grandson headed that way this summer. Go here: http://www.knox.army.mil/

They have a great deal of information about graduation. Grandson gets on a plane immediately after graduation, heading to Hawaii for CTLT, so we will pass on his graduation. Will not miss commissioning or Ranger School graduation next year.

Going to see the kid this weekend, to help him move apartments and pack for camp.
Then we'll go see him again after he gets back, and take him out for a steak dinner.

I *paid* a visit to Clothing Sales (not one anywhere near him) and am bringing him a duffel bag (they freaking issue side-zip bags now!) Full of new boots, sock, tshirts, etc.

Yup, mine just had me bring him a pile of mag pouches, grenade pouches, an etool, gloves, etc...

So, 0430 this morning, phone rings ... "I'm at the airport and the Army screwed up my ticket; I called my unit and they said 'buy a new one, and the Army will pay you back.'"
Welcome to the Army, son.

I probably never get that $463 back, but at least he got there on time.

Yup...I sent mine with new but broke in Bellview boots, good glasses and gloves--graduates week after next. I'll pick him up at the airport and let him chow down at a place of his choosing. I got a kick out of talking with him on the phone...his DI's name is SFC Hulka.

Do he and his peers get the joke? I hope you didn't have to explain it to them; that would make me feel really old.
