Nice.

I've heard a lot of love/hate with that bike, looks like you are on the love side.

Thanks, I grew up with this bike. My parents neighbor got it from a police department on the east cost in the early 80's. As a kid when I would hear him roar down the street I'd run out and follow him home just to look at it. I love the older bikes but they do take some tinkering, or at least mine does. The same guy has a early 60's pan basket that I'm trying to talk him out of. I want to build a striped bobber, nothing on the handle bars except the throttle.

Ding, ding, ding!

(Actually it's a custom VFR750 built with RC45 parts...I didn't have $27,000 at the time. Aaron Slight replica.

I have plans to build a sporty into a Scrambler. I really wanted to love the Triumph Scrambler, but after I took it for a test ride those dreams were dashed. It's a lawn mower engine, boring and flat, no tourqe, no power.

For some it's probably the bees knees. After all, lots of people loved the 70's BMW R75/5, I thought it sucked. Perfectly fine motorcycle, just boring.

I'm no brand whore, I'll ride anything that works for me. However, HD's fit a niche for me, intoxicating tourqe, simple mechanics, nice character, important factors for me.

I love the FXR I have now but alas, it has no real off-road capability. I want to be able to ride up to Alaska, or down through Mexico (and further). So I want some sort of dual sport but I prefer the style of an older bike and the simplicity of the HD motor.

So I'm going to have to build one as no one makes what I want.

Not a big fan of panniers, I prefer soft bags.

Matchanu, have you thought about starting with an HD XR750....?
I think that would rock as a "dual sport".

You may rethink that preference after a day long rain on the Dalton Highway between Deadhorse and Antigun Pass.

It's no different than the way I ride now. I waterproof everything that needs to stay dry. Panniers are far too restrictive with space and can't be fixed on the side of the road if they break. I ran into that issue a few times with panniers in the past, not to mention weight.

I try not to carry too much these days, light as possible.

That is not to say I won't use them in the future, just where my mind is right now.

Rare and expensive.

It would be a cool dual sport, but I haven't found the dog that shits money nor the tree he eats from.
