Word for the day... Military version

Today's word is "Empathy."

This is the feeling you get temporarily, when you look across the dirt road your platoon is marching on in 95 degree heat, and see a smaller framed guy humping a 90lb ruck, carrying a 60, with extra belts of ammo wrapped around his shoulders and you think to yourself- "Sucks to be you Bro."

Feel free to add...

Catching up with the unit after repairing a thrown track in three feet of mud in the dead of winter in Hohenfels and passing another tank with two tracks thrown to the inside while night is falling.

And muttering to yourself, “Sucks to be you, brothers.”

As a DZC, looking up at a C17 loaded with 82d troopers with rucks that has made its 3rd No Drop pass at 700 feet in near-freezing rain conditions, and wondering what's worse. Continuing to racetrack or getting a green light.

Getting sprayed by a ruptured pressurized sewage pipe, then noticing that the guy next to you wasn't fast enough to close his mouth first.

Setting up to land in an LZ (in a Blackhawk) while mawing down on a Subway BMT, while noting the infantry troops we're supposed to pick up cleaning up their MRE debris upon hearing our approach...

Sitting in a 30 foot hover at 29 Palms and watching a porta potty slide out from under the helicopter on its side, trailing blue juice. "Oooh, that's gotta suck."

The word(s) for today are "Trigger Warning"...

This is what you get from the senior NCO after returning from an ambush patrol at the red painted 55 gallon drum of sand, just before you unload your weapons.

Ironic this is the word of the day. Wife and youngest daughter (15) home today when I came home from work. Daughter had a friend (boy) over to hangout.

Me after a couple of hours: "I think it's time to go".

The word(s) for the day... "Safe space."

For some of us, this is a guardpost, firebase, or in my case, a concrete bunker in the ROK on the DMZ. Bunker #5, GP Collier. I had a 50 with lots of ammo, TOW on the roof, and 4 claymores out front.

Today's word... "Woke".

This is what happened in Fort Benning, on the first morning of Basic, when the DIs came in at 0330, banging trash can lids and screaming. The guy on the upper bunk, last name Colter, was a 220lb large frame coal black guy from SC... We both became "woke" at the same time, and he ended up on my shoulders. After that, we decided I would "woke" after I saw him hit the floor. We were best buds during basic. I miss that guy.

Ha that is great, what memories. We all ended up becoming conditioned to getting out of the rack the minute the speaker 'popped' to life before blaring revelry. And our fire guards would wake up all the squad leaders prior to that.

When your indigs you're advising keep saying "Only 500 more meters, Lohias!"

Then, three hours later, you realize they're talking about altitude, not distance.
