I will never, ever get used to putting them down. He lived in our home, which is now empty as never before.
Miss you bud.
Sorry to hear man, that never gets any easier. Good looking boy.

Was going to post an update on our newest mutt, and noticed that it just happens to be rescue dog appreciation day on imgur. :)

Pete, before (at the pound):

Never seen a dog that scared of people. When my wife brought him home, he low crawled into the house like he was under fire. Wouldn't let me near him for about two months. Kind of made me want to meet his previous owner.

Pete, after: (~ 7 months later, and with thanks to milkboneskivvies for some great advice)

He loves my wife, still isn't 100% sure of me but is sure enough to go fishing and ATVing. So probably high 80's :) And is warming up big time to other people and other dogs, more so every day.

Fucker. :) The face says it all. Think I'll chalk this one up as a success. Thanks again MBS.

Ha! I've got stories of an old dog at the Mtn Rgr Camp we kept turns of taking care of. Sunk like he had a missing drain plug in his ass.

Pete looks like he has potential! I opened the door about this time of evening around 3 days ago. A very grown, very exhausted female border collie looking dog much like Pete was lying on the door matt. She was a mess. Really sweaty and exhausted. I fed her and gave her water. She was gone the next morning. Must've got her bearing then. There's a hiking trail about 2 miles away.

Mine had to learn to swim. Every time I slowed down to fish she hit the water before the trolling motor did. I did slow her down from doing so fast when I made her happy ass swim around the boat 5 times before I pulled her in. She also figured out the the lowest point on the boat was the swamp area by the engine.

Small terrier dog of ours was out with spouse & I on his first trip. He seemed ok. I parked the nose of the boat into about 10 ft of lillies or whatever. A layer of hydrofoil as well. Was gonna catch some bait fish. I guess the dog had to piss and stepped into the lillies like he was Jesus or something. It was hard getting him back in the boat.

"self-critiquing"

That's why I like those dog vests with the handles on the back. Works good for getting big old cranky mutts in the truck too.

When I lived in Hot Sulphur Springs, Colorado I would go duck hunting with the neighbor and his two labs, a black and a chocolate. They wore wetsuits, and these dogs swam some incredible stretches of water to retrieve ducks, and I am not talking a few swift running ripples......

My bullmastiff. Hes a rock fish. Swims straight to the bottom like a rock. Loves water out of the hose but wont go in any pool of water since he was a pup. Hes 11 years old now and he has gotten even more afraid of it. Thought about trying to teach for about 2 minutes. He quickly displayed 150lbs of Hell no.
My Shepard on the other hand I swear is part beaver and otter

My dogs all hate the water. Two GSD's and a beagle/foxhound mix. Zeus, my boy Shep loves playing in the water hose, though. He will get soaked trying to "catch" the water.

Meet Delilah! Our newest GSD of the family. She is a 5 month old rescue from an Amish breeder here in Ohio.T Her two sisters were with her. One was adopted by the time we found her and her sister is still there at the rescue. If only I had more room.
