I'll be roasting Thurs.
Oh man... love that. Iíll be giving that a shot tonight. Walking into the kitchen pre-sunlight smelling coffee would be tits out. :-)

It's too easy, wifi timers are $20. I have another on my espresso machine for the weekend, so it's warmed up when I'm ready.

You'll enjoy the Brazil, but I don't smoke, so not much feedback I can give on that. The Sumatra is more complex, and has tobaccoey notes to it, but I'm not sure if you want the coffee as a backdrop (the Brazil), or an accompaniment (maybe it would clash? I don't know).

FP technique from THE MAN:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st571DYYTR8

Brew ratios:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fl79p_P4nbo

I HIGHLY agree with the latter on grind size. Typically FP grind is coarse, but I much prefer a regular drip grind in the FP. As long as it's not choking the mesh when you depress it you're good to go. The ratio of coffee:water is 1:15-1:17 in weight, if you have a scale, but grind size affects extraction, so a coarser grind will need more grounds, finer will need less, to approach the approx same 'strength'.

Or yeah, 2 heaping eating teaspoons (or measuring tablespoons, doesn't really matter what spoon, just use the same spoon every time so you can adjust accurately). I like a 2 standard plastic picnic spoons heaped high.
Both of those are amazing. I've been using French press for years and the one simple change I made yesterday was breaking the crust then letting it rest. Completely changed the profile.

Realized today I was underdosing the coffee:water ratio (about 30-40grams per 875mL), but to be honest, it turns out I like it better after trying a 1:15 ratio (60g to 875mL) today. But I also went with a finer grind (from a 34 to a 24 on a Virtuoso), so I'll keep the size and split the difference on the ratio tomorrow and see.

Nice job. Small details make a difference. I've always just depressed the plunger immediately after pouring the water, so it steeped while completely submerged, same idea.

Nothing trumps taste. People hype all kinds of ideas, but do what tastes best to you.

I accidentally roasted an extra batch just now, so I have 3lbs of the above Brazil Rancho Grande. If someone wants it, $52 shipped anywhere conus/APO.

A long time customer did a nice review on my coffee:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb4hL971JP8&

FF to 5:34: 'sips coffee sips coffee again. Hey, I just have a knack for choosing great beans, the farmers do most of the work, I just try to stay the hell out of their way when I roast it.
