Battle Off Samar - 75 Years Ago

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, 23-26 Oct 1944, is arguably the largest naval battle in history. Today marks the 75th anniversary of the “Battle Off Samar,” one of Leyte Gulf’s major events. The actions of “Taffy 3” and others that day are incredible.

My late father in law was in the skies that day. Looking down from his TBF Avenger, he “...saw the biggest, blackest ship I ever saw, so I attacked it.” His contribution:

Very cool.

I posted in the Paul Allen thread that his group located the St Lo in May.

Well done to your FIL. I'll be in Leyte in December and always stop at MacArthur Park to pay our respect.

That was an incredible battle and incredible bravery by Lt Mack! My great uncle (RIP/MIA) was serving in that theatre and went MIA a few weeks prior to that battle.

The battle off Samar showed what the US Navy could do. The courage and fighting spirit shown was nothing short of incredible.
Think of Luitenent Commander Ernest Evans unhesitatingly turning his tiny escort destroyer to attack the main Japanese fleet. It's amazing. This would be an excellent topic for a movie.

The aviators attacked with everything they had. Longrifle your father in law was an amazing man.

Commander Evan's and his crew's actions are still the stuff of legend.

BTW, the USS Johnston was a Fletcher-class destroyer, not a destroyer-escort.

Seriously though, the Battle Off Samar is an amazing battle.
