Thieves emptied the bank account of America's oldest living veteran

Sickening, just effing sickening. I canít think of a more despicable act of cowardice nor an appropriate punishment if this shitbag or these shitbags are caught.

Link here.

Quote:
(CNN) ó Someone has stolen the identity of the oldest living veteran in America and emptied his bank account.

The family of 112-year-old Richard Overton said they don't know how a thief got Overton's social security and personal checking account numbers.

They discovered the issue Thursday when one of the World War II veteran's cousins made a deposit into his account.

"I looked at it -- what the hell are these debits?" Overton's cousin, Volma Overton Jr., told CNN affiliate KXAN.

Now to find this thief or these thieves. My guess is that it's sombody close to him, but I don't know all the ways identity theft can go down.

My first thought was that it would be pretty hard to use his ID.

I really don't like thieves.

Any Legal Eagles know if/how FDIC could figure into this? He didn't *give* anyone the info? How is this different than a bank robbery/"bank goes under" scenario?

What a man though. Freaking 114 y/o, still hits a shot now & then and smokes up to 9 cigars a day.

He will be well taken care of. I hope someone catches the Mtn Dew/Dorito eating nerd that stole his savings and beats the shit out of em.

He will get his money back. The thieves didn't steal from him, they stole from his BANK. Big difference. In cases like this, the bank is on the hook since they were the ones that allowed the fraudulent withdrawls from his account. They are obligated to replace the money.

However, here is the big caveat: if the money was taken by someone who had legal access to the account, then the bank is not responsible. It is highly likely for a 112 year old that a family member or caretaker has co-signing authority for the account. That is who most likely did it.

Reading the article, it sounds like the family has a good idea who did it and since the money was used buy savings bonds , this wasn't the work of a master criminal.
