300 Marines Headed to Norway
I've been tracking these stories for a while now and it seems as though it's confirmed that 300 Marines will be stationed here as of January as part of a rotational force.
Just in the odd chance that anyone has contact with any of the Marines headed over, please shoot me a PM. I'm just 30-40min away from the area where they will be located and it'd be nice to link up. Granted, I'm sure it won't take long to locate 300 Jarheads in this small town ![]() http://edition.cnn.com/2016/11/29/eu...der/index.html https://www.foreignaffairs.com/artic...-troops-norway

Sounds like an Infantry Company (+) support crew from Lejeune. I hope all goes well but 300 grunts in a small town tend to wear out the welcome mat very quick, especially Lejeuniacs who haven't seen women with teeth in years.

USMC has been pre-positioning material and exercising in Norway for a long time...300 bodies continually rotating through feels much more like optics/messaging exercise than a significant change in policy/strategy.

I thought they were an ongoing training exchange. This new announcement is probably due to fierce Russian expansionism into the Arctic. "Russia Presents Revised Claim of Arctic Territory to the United Nations" http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/10/wo...ions.html?_r=0 Article on the Russian Arctic Task Force https://sputniknews.com/russia/20160...oops-analysis/ They appear reasonably well equipped compared to the usual Russian formations. Interesting to note that Russia is making a play in the Arctic but their Northern Fleet sailed to the Mediterranean a couple months or so ago. One of their carriers couldn't even make it http://uatoday.tv/news/russian-aircr...an-798924.html But I shouldn't cast stones, with the Zumwalt in our inventory. Another recent event, where the implications didn't get much play in the American news, is Norway defeated Russia at the World Chess Championship today. |

Beer and pizza ain't cheap in Norway, that's for sure.
I hope those Marines are allowed to buy a bottle or two of duty free on their way in.

Went to Norway in 2002 for Operation Battle Griffin. Took the HSV-X through the North Seas, it was a neat ship. Beautiful country and beautiful women. One of my buddies wound up finding a wife there. Trondheim had the absolute best chow hall I have ever eaten at.

Did Battle Griffin in 96, Strong Resolve in 98, and back again for Battle Griffin 99. Enjoyed myself every time we went.
Semper. |
