The one with the rifleman executing the man hugging his little girl gets to me every time I see it.

In 1942, as Yugoslav Partisan Stjepan Filipović was about to be hanged, he raised his arms in defiance and yelled, "Death to fascism, freedom to the people!" This iconic photo of him at his execution was made into a statue in Yugoslavia. ![]()

An amazing collection of the truly dark times and actions of our history... and some a lot less darker. Thanks for posting!
The photograph of the 2800 year-old skeletons who died kissing, makes you wonder what the story was about - who they were, why they were buried, eons ago... LbbRpbj.jpg I'm also thinking the early WW1 era U-boats weren't designed with user-friendliness in-mind, either... ![]() SIngIEm.jpg

This is King George VI funeral in 1952.
My grandfather is the Grenadier Guard last in line (5th) at the back of the coffin. Both he and my father served in the Royal Army. ![]() I also have a picture of my great granddad in a trench during WWI....I'll get it from my mother and scan it to share. The communists' defiant statement is admirable, but quite ironic.
Edit: The repeal day picture cracks me up. You know damn well those taps never closed. Last edited by redhawk; 20 May 2014 at 16:10. |

Powerful images, Shadow. Thank you for sharing.
Looking through these photographs made me think that some people look down at other countries because of their being in a seemingly constant state of war... yet they forget that the whole Europe was on fire for a significant part of the last century. What a scary times to live in!

Quote:
The Baker shot was the fifth nuclear detonation that the US conducted, preceeded by Trinity, Hiroshima, Nagasake, and the Able Shot, which was also in Bikini. The more famous picture of the Baker shot is the one in the OP's link, showing the very wide mushroom cloud with the distinctive water column. Less widely seen is a shot from only a few seconds later, after the Wilson Cloud of instantaneously condensed water vapor has disappated, revealing the actual mushroom cloud of irradiated water, which BTW caused the Navy untold grief with unexpected decontamination efforts, exposing lots of sailors to pretty high rad counts... we were still pretty innocent back then of the effects. ![]()
