Sarcasm. I had trucks. It was payback for me buying every bit of poguey bait in the Mtns PX during a tobacco/gum run, filling up my pant legs, and successfully EE'ing back to our squad hut (we were in the Chapel, at the end), to the joys of my squad - my peers were excellent.

Looking back, bonehead move, coulda lost the Tab - but that's how you get 19 year olds to charge machine guns...they're stupid.

Worked out, LOL! Like Jim "Patches" Watson said: "Doing something wrong, and doing something and getting caught; are two *entirely* different things!"

Well it seems we are all meandering down memory lane...

I got nothing in Florida while in the field.

But, speaking of stupid, I noticed when we came out of the swamp and were eating our hot meal, the full sugar shaker on the chow hall table. Keep in mind, I've passed the phase and I'm moving on to Desert. For some stupid reason, I looked around, saw no one looking and stuffed into my cargo pocket. Dumped off my tray, exited out the door and walked over by the dumpster and started pouring sugar down my throat. It was glorious.. for about 1 minute. Then I started throwing up the meal I just ate. I tossed the bottle into the dumpster and moved out smartly.

While in Desert, I was walking somewhere and noticed some jungle boots sticking out from underneath a building. I looked and it was Doc Danis from B.co 1/75. Doc was an SF Qualified Medic, Scuba bubble as well, who had to go to Ranger School.

Apparently, his old Team had been training in Dugway, knew he was coming and left him a cache of pougie bait. Doc threw me a Snickers and said don't tell anyone. I may have typed that story here before but at that time it remained OPSEC.

I once rode a jungle penetrator down from the MEDEVAC bird to pick up the fish and hush puppies I had forgotten to go get before the final mission in Florida for the other RI's but that's probably another thread.

Looking around at my class, and considering Dugway as the last phase, with a live fire involved? That scared me.

I remember that. The students rotation changed about 3 times when i was in the mountains. Desert was 3rd, then 4th. Then non-existent..

I was the last class to have Florida as last phase, the class after us had Desert as last phase. And they changed the length of the phases also. We only did one week in Desert and almost 3 weeks in Florida. The class after us did two weeks in Desert and Two weeks in Florida, IIRC.

The SFQC is always changing the sequence around also.

Yup. Me too. I remember parts and pieces of rockets or missiles laying around in the desert (tailfins/stabilizers and whatnot), and at least one objective was an old wrecked and fairly large radar dish.

The jump into desert was eye opening to say the least; I was still getting JMPI'd with the doors open when most studs were sounding off for equipment check. My 2 qt fell out while I was shuffling to the door so I reeled it in by the dummy cord and jumped with it tucked against my chest like a football... Yeti nets, ants, mesquite bushes and sunburned ears are all I remember from that place.

McGregor Range sucks. The only thing good there was The Scorpion's Den. And the Dallas Club in El Paso. Which Im sure you didnt get to see during your particular visit.

On a positive note...Grange DZ was neverending.

Not my type of Country.

So when was Desert at Ft Bliss? What year moved to Dugway? Reason for the change of location.

I did Basic Training at Ft Bliss.

Moved from Dugway. Not sure? McGregor Range is an extension of Ft Bliss but actually in New Mexico. Near White Sands.

ETA : Budget restraints. Loss of Jatted A/C. Leasing commercial aircraft due to real world missions killed the Desert phase.

It moved October 1991. I was supposed to be the last class at Dugway, but since 1RS recycled me in mountains, I ended up at Bliss.

So they had Desert at Bliss, then Dugway, then moved back to Bliss?

I only knew they had it at Bliss before Dugway.

I was second to last class thru Dugway. I loved that phase and the Utah desert. We did not have the live fire portion as all the targets were already moved.

Speaking of McGregor Range and Grange DZ...I ran across this old pic today.

Some handsome stud standing on the DZ after a jump. Told ya it was neverending.
