However, with that being said, I'm contemplating a summer home either in north central PA or Vermont, just so I can make quick excursions into NY to visit with my family and friends. Plus both daughters are talking about NY universities (RIT and USMA) so that may factor into things as well.

What’s really nice!! My friend, federal cop in Washington DC, registers his M-16, took 4 hours, it’s today a transferrable M-16.

No argument. My only thought is at least get on record with your displeasure somewhere outside the system.

He's called the NFA number at least a few times that I know of, "pending" would not be helping my blood pressure considering his background and the fact that most Form 4s seem to be running around 5 months.

Last time I called about a Form 4 the lady told me "Pending" simply means we have cashed your check and you are somewhere in the process. I think I am somewhere around nine (9) months and counting.

I can't remember if NFA Branch is still processing based on regions. If they are, that would certainly explain the significant variations in processing times for paper applications.

I believe they are.

I actually called the ATF Seattle field office with a WTF when one of mine was a running couple months behind the average. Pretty sure that wasn't the best idea ever, but my FFL did call 2 days later to tell me I could come down and pick up my suppressor.

Just ran across this:

https://www.nfatracker.com/community...-get-approved/

Googling "federal officer" and "rapback list" produces some interesting results NFA wise. Definitely well outside my knowledge base. Anyone?

Mine took 17 months. I was about to go to the FFL and request a refund, decided to give it one more month. Glad I did.

I thought about it several times but decided to just write it off and forget about it and maybe someday it would go through. Glad I waited too.

I really did have an itch to find one that was well matched for a 16 inch barreled 300 Blackout but the entire process just pushes me towards disinterest. It isn't really the cost associated - its just the expenditure of effort dealing with an incompetent system.
I hate to say "the system is broke" because I believe the system works EXACTLY the way the bureaucrats designed it to work.

E-File has been in operation for a little bit now. I have been hearing of approvals of Form 1's in as little as 14-21 days.

https://www.atf.gov/firearms/applications-eforms

It is my understanding that Form 4's are being turned around in 6-9 months.

Just do an AR Pistol. Get a SB Tactical PDW brace on completed lower from PSA, for example. Then put any upper you want on there. No stamp need and its virtually identical to a rifle..
That shows how broken the system really is.
