That number does not exist in South Africa according Telkom SA. The first few digits of the number he gave is the dialling code for Nigeria.

You're over thinking it.

There is no kid, you'll never meet a person face to face.

Once the check is received by the victim... the scammer will urgently need the money to be wired back in order to pay for his kid's travel, him mother's kidney, etc.

He may just want all Virgil's personal details for ID fraud on some other job he has lined up , perhaps American citizenship. The Nigerians do that quite a bit here in South Africa - get your details and before you know it you are married to them and have accounts all over the fucking show.

This is what's known as an "Advanced Fee Scam". They will send you a check, which you cash and send them a portion of it, usually with a FedEx. It will have some type of statement saying it must be done immediately.
Once your bank finds out the check is stolen, or forged, your account will be debited for the amount of the check.
Obviously, stay clear of any type of scam like this.
If you want any more info on how this works, or how to possibly follow-up, PM me.

All is definitely appreciated. I have no intent of any follow up, whether to mess with these people or to give it a try. I have way too many other priorities (finding work, family etc...), as I said I wanted people to see this so as to get some discussion going and make people aware of this scam. Thanks again for all the input.

I may shoot an email out to them in the next couple of days. If it gets as far as them sending a check, I'll give them a mailing address of 1060 W. Addison St., Chicago.

Maybe I'll even get Burt Mercer involved.

Burton Mercer: This, gentlemen, is the elegant abode of one Elwood Blues.

Officer Mount: Thanks for your help, Mr. Mercer.

Burton Mercer: You know, I kind of like the Wrigley Field bit.

Officer Mount: Yeah, *real* cute.

It sounds like the classic Nigerian email scam, but they certainly seem to be a particularly dumb group of people...considering the demographic this particular one is targeting.

The folks running the scams out of Nigeria are far from dumb. They are raking in hundreds of millions of dollars.

As for target demographic, they are looking for anyone who will play their game.

The verbiage used will find some bonehead tough-guy who wants to be a "bodyguard" who will play along with them. Someone like Tonya Hardings "bodyguard" Shawn Eckhardt.

Saw a similiar post on Denver's CL, except it was a Brit who was supposedly flying his wife in to do some shopping and was offering $900 for the weekend.
Basically the same request for bank info, so I contacted CL and they deleted the post.

Dear Mr. Maniche

I am responding to your query in regards to the position of Unskilled Bodyguard for you 11 year old son. I am currently between positions in my usual occupation of Skilled Bodyguard, but decided to contact you to determine whether or not having skills would disqualify me for the uskilled position you have posted.

A little about myself. My name is Anne Haiser-Bouche, 33 years old, and presently awaiting my next assignment from the Personal Security Contractor I usually sign on with, Bernard W. Eiser.

I have current qualifications in all types of small arms, excellent martial arts skills, to include being rated 11.3 on the proficiency scale for the Malachi Death Touch. I speak 5 languages, and can understand 3 of them. I have a valid international drivers license and experience driving everything from Vespas to M-1 Tanks.

If necessary, I am willing to undergo a Mnemonic Scrub to erase all vestiges of the skills I currently possess, in order to bring myself down to the unskilled level that you seek. The choice is yours.

Please feel free to contact me via e-mail if this position is still available, as Mr Eiser could be in need of my services at any time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Regards, and good health

Anne Haiser-Bouche

There was a similar scam a few months back, only instead of "son" it was "wife" for a day shopping.

Stay away
