Exclamation Aviator was buried in his aircraft at Sea

Loyce Edward Deen, an Aviation Machinist Mate 2nd Class, USNR, was a gunner on a TBM Avenger. On November 5, 1944, Deen's squadron participated in a raid on Manila where his plane was hit multiple times by anti-aircraft fire while attacking a Japanese cruiser. Deen was killed. The Avenger's pilot, Lt Robert Cosgrove, managed to return to his carrier, the USS Essex. Both Deen and the plane had been shot up so badly that it was decided to leave him in it. It is believed to be the only time in U.S. Navy history (and probably U.S. Military history) that an aviator was buried in his aircraft after being killed in action. My Grandfather (RIP) was a gunner on TBMs. Those guys had some brass balls.
Very humbling video.

President Bush was an Avenger pilot when he was shot down near Chichi Jima in 1944.

..IIRC, one of the youtube vids accounted that the belly gunner (crew of three) of the TBM climbing up to the cockpit to stay with the pilot after the tail gunner was decapped, until it landed back on the carrier.. I could just imagine what gravity rendered the belly gunners turret with what remained above it.

I read this poem once. Randall Jarrell: From my mother's sleep I fell into the State,
And I hunched in its belly till my wet fur froze.
Six miles from earth, loosed from its dream of life,
I woke to black flak and the nightmare fighters.
When I died they washed me out of the turret with a hose.
