$34 Toll to go 11 miles on I-66 in Virginia

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/12/04...rolls-out.html

Yep. On an existing road that has been there for decades. Not to add lanes to ease congestion or do other improvements. It is so the City of Arlington can make more bicycle paths. Adding the lane eastbound only happened to ease some of the outrage, and that was when the toll was predicted to be $13 each way.

Glad I don't work in DC. Unbelievable.

I wonder if it'll eventually go to a Chinese company like some other major toll roads in the USA. I mean, it's not like they EVER give up a source of revenue so the thing will always be a toll road.

I 66 is not Virginia. That's Occupied Virginia. Not considered part of the Commonwealth anywhere south of Fredericksburg or west of Front Royal.

At least you've been given a reason, Sharky. In the times I have been up north to Boston, I felt there was a toll booth every 3 feet, and the roads STILL look shitty! Where's that money going???

You mean North of Fredericksburg, correct?

Nobody south of Fredericksburg considers 66 part of the state.

This has been a hot button issue for over a decade, what to do with 66. Every politician from Mark Warner and George Allen to Gerry Connolly and his GOP challengers have campaigned on widening 66 inside the beltway.

Time will tell, but I'm just really curious how much revenue it will capture to divert to other transportation projects. Metro has been shit for a while, bussing isn't really all that much better. Sure if you live and work in a decent range bike paths can be a decent option. But that whole side of NoVa is fucked.

Metro even if it was more reliable and like financially solvent has hit its max capacity and been there for a while.

I haven't really followed the reporting on the 395 express lanes. I've enjoyed using them for the odd case I needed to cut through all that 395 nonsense. But I don't really recall hearing anything about it being any kind of fiscal miracle.

Costs me $6 every time I visit NY for the privilege to drive on their highway for a couple hours. Those roads suck too.

Compare the subways of Seville, or Tokyo, or London, or just about any big and DC. Rush hour where you've got a train only every 15 minutes or so, rather than every three or four for, well, everywhere else.

It's all about shitty management decisions, made by indifferent folks who can't be fired.

Yup...once you cross Afton Mountain on I-64, it's literally all downhill from there (no pun intended).

Ho...now! We know how to skin a buck and run a trot line here in Hanover Co.!

Also, they can take that toll and shove it up their NOVA (another country in my opinion) asses.

Sure is for me, because I expense it everytime I drive it.

You ought to see the slight of hand they used in Jax when the voters spoke. Put in a tax (that is still there)....and SURPRISE, the tolls are back.

I have only seen one toll road ever removed, 400 in N. Atlanta. Only to be replaced by "Lexus lanes" on I-85 north of the city. I'm still trying to figure out how some states, like Kansas, can charge a toll on an interstate highway.

There's been a toll on I77 in WV for several decades. They had to toll it to pay for it, which I'm sure has been paid for several dozen times over. However, as stated before, they're not going to give up that revenue stream.

That stretch is shit anyways, with just HOV. Can’t imagine paying to sit in it.

I used to commute mornings, 66 eastbound to 495 north to work everyday. Minimum hour and a half, not unusual for a two hour commute for all of 30 miles. Absolutely miserable, would have gladly paid the toll.
