LTG Raymond (Tony) Thomas

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...tions-command/

Any predictions on LTG Thomas' lean toward women as Mk1 Mod0 Special Operations pipehitters?

Do you mean will he go Party Line on the issue?

I'd hope not, but expect he would.... the point being likely a condition of continued employment and all...

I seriously doubt he is a fan of the concept internally but if he didn't support it politically I am assuming he would have been retired already instead of continuing to climb the ladder.

He spoke to us for over an hour at a course I attended last August at Bragg. Someone in the audience asked his opinion on the matter, and all I remember was that he artfully sidestepped the question with words to the effect of "females have always had a role in SOF, and I expect that role to continue." He was very non-committal.

There were numerous interagency females in the audience, so maybe he was just being political for their sake.

Hahaha.....well what he said was technically true. Just very defined roles that they fulfilled.

He'll cave, maybe even without token resistance.

He didn't get to where he is by "bucking the system"

We don't have leaders anymore, we have managers...

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I have known Tony Thomas since he was a young Captain and have worked for him in several different capacities since 1988. He is one of the best leaders I have ever known. Period. And I have known a few. He has been at the pointy end of every conflict we have been in since Grenada. I don't think you will find many people in SOF who would agree with your opinion.

He's the best CG I've seen and sad to see him move on.

Here he is talking to the CTC at West Point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYYW8aG_Gag. A number of his comments are not necessarily in compliance with the party line.

I think there are many leaders who decide that they can continue to do right by the mission and the men, while taking their bite of a progressively nastier shit sandwich. Hopefully he is one of them. Given what has been said above, and who has said it, I would guess he very likely is.

That ship has already sailed, regardless of what LTG Thomas thinks or says. There was a deadline for the service chiefs and the SOCOM CG to inform the SECDEF if they intended to seek exceptions from opening any and all positions to females. GEN Votel did not seek an exception. The deadline has passed.

My personal experience with LTG Thomas has been positive, and I regard him as a decisive and fair leader who is not hesitant to speak his mind. I don't see, however, why he should spend much time belaboring the issue of female integration into all positions within the command, as it is now policy beyond his control or authority.

I served with LTG Thomas in 2/75. He was an honorable man then and I think its fair to say he will do what needs to be done to maintain the standard. Most importantly, he will focus on the mission.

I'm thinking, which is always a scary thing, that these GO's aren't going to throw away 30+ years of service by making/saying a knee jerk reaction in regards to gender integration. I believe they, like myself, are taking a wait and see approach. They came to Ranger school, 3 graduated and the school is still open and grown men are still quitting.

The tricky part is how long do you "wait and see"? If it's after American blood has been spilled then obviously it's too late. The other part is what are we waiting for? It's an election year, if a repub becomes POTUS will he overturn it? And finally will the standards be lowered? Just gonna "wait and see".

Any more women currently attending Ranger School? Are you getting a small steady stream coming through? Or since 3 made it through, and all the hype is gone, not really seeing many? If females are continuing to come through the pipeline are they getting a special train up like the first three prior, or just coming in straight from OBCs and their units like most do?
