So just give up? Do what you can (and are willing to do - security vs convenience). "Surfing the Internet" is probably the easiest thing to implement as far as obfuscation. The hard part is getting your personal data off of the 10 Gatrillion private company sites that sell it.

I use Nord VPN and a few other things.
My email is going to change once I sit down and just do it to protonmail.

Good start. Proton has a VPN too.

Think of yourself as being on a rowboat in the ocean with no life-vest, taking on water. You have to bail water, no matter how futile. There are some big events colliding that could help privacy in the US: DoJ/FISA abuses, the fact that GDPR in the EU makes us look goofy, and other disclosures. Do what you can to keep your head above the waterline.

New facial recognition tool tracks targets across different social networks

Quote:
“Performing intelligence gathering online is a time-consuming process,” Trustwave explained in a post this morning. “What if it could be automated and done on a mass scale with hundreds or thousands of individuals?”

Social Mapper doesn’t require API access to social networks, a restriction that has hampered social media tracking tools like Geofeedia. Instead, the system performs automated manual searches in an instrumented browser window, then uses facial recognition to scan through the first 10 to 20 results for a match. The manual searches mean the tool can be quite slow compared to API-based scans. The developer estimates that searching a target list of 1,000 people could take more than 15 hours.

The end result is a spreadsheet of confirmed accounts for each name, perfect for targeted phishing campaigns or general intelligence gathering.

Best to avoid putting your pix on social media, but now Facebook requires a photo.

They may require a photo, but it doesn't have to be of your face. It doesn't even have to be of you.

My dog is now my face on FB.
I probably won't do that for LinkedIn. :)

Definitely an open book with decisions out of your control without your knowledge....

Quote:
Back in March, as it investigated a spate of armed robberies across Portland, Maine, the FBI made an astonishing, unprecedented request of Google, Forbes reports. The feds wanted the tech giant to find all users of its services who'd been within the vicinity of at least two of nine of those robberies. They limited the search to within 30-minute timeframes around when the crimes were committed. But the request covered a total space of 45 hectares and could've included anyone with an Android or iPhone using Google's tools, not just the suspect. From a report:
The FBI then demanded a lot of personal information on affected users, including their full names and addresses, as well as their Google account activity. The feds also wanted all affected users' historical locations. According to court records, while Google didn't provide the information, the cops still found their suspect in the end.
