SF Vet, Not a Gun Guy

Preface: Trying to use as few details as possible. Feel free to slap me down for posting this.

Hi all. My sister is dating a guy who's one of y'all, got out a few years ago. No reason to doubt his credentials. He's a solid dude all around and treats her well.

We're a gun family, and collectively have some nice stuff. Brother is a gunsmith and we've got number higher end AR's we've put a lot of time and money into.

Said individual came over to meet family. We were excited to show him our rifles and get his take. Sparing a lot detail, if I hadn't known about his background in Army/SF, I would've guessed this guy had never held a gun of any kind in his life. A while after he came shooting with us; same thing, genuinely appeared to have little familiarity with a rifle (from a civilian's perspective) and didn't hit much.

Apropos of nothing, just kind of struck me as odd. I'm sure not every green beret is a gun nut, but just kind of found it odd.

Not every SF guy is a gun nut but they know how to handle a gun especially if it is an AR platform. Might want to check his creeds and background just to be sure.

Trust but verify is a good moto.

jmeter, it’s a real easy fix. PM one of us his name and we can check for you. No harm no foul if he is legit.

Yeah I would check up on that real quick if I were you. I know people are joking about 18D's and shit but I have never met one who straight up would look like he had never handled one from a civilian's perspective.

I think that's a definite possibility. Back in the 1980s when 10th Group at Fort Devens issued the Romanian AKMs to the Teams young buck sergeant me wound up asking this room full of college grads how we were supposed to carry the three 30-round AK magazines that we'd been issued. It was some clever SF officer who asked, "You mean they won't fit in your M-16 ammo pouches?"
Then right away another one helpfully suggested taping all 3 of then together thereby eliminating the need for ammo pouches.
I politely thanked him while trying not to roll my eyes and said we'd figure it out.

But that said, he definitely needs to be checked out. Stolen Valor types come in all flavors and if this is the case who knows what else he's hiding?

As stated above, good advice. Especially TFG's about asking him a few questions.

However, I can't see him not knowing how to confidently handle a rifle whether you like them or not.

We all do Combat marksmanship and flat range training quite often. As well as CQB (or whatever it's called now)

I'd do some checking. Good luck
