Army "Recon"

Requesting clarification--when I hear "Recon" I think "Marine Corps." Someone told me today they were a cook in Vietnam (173rd Airborne) then "Recon."

I have read about LRRPs -- and think it is Long Range Recon Patrol . . . would they have ever called themselves "Recon"?

Or is this another oxygen thief ?

Don't want to be skeptical if there is some Army division/unit/MOS or something called "Recon" that I am not familiar with. Anybody?

We (Cavalry Scouts) called ourselves Recon occasionally, and the LRS Soldiers are often referred to as Recon.

The Old Guard used to have a "Recon" platoon back in the 90's.

The doctrinally correct term for the "scout" platoon in the HHC of infantry (formerly light/airborne/air assault) battalions is "infantry reconaissance platoon". It was that way though the 90s and currently, although I don't know when it started. I remember reading about the battalion recon platoons in CSCs in Vietnam era infantry battalions.

It goes WAY back. They called them I&R (intelligence and reconnaisance) platoons in World War II.

Truth. In 3d Brigade, 82d (70's) the greeting of the day for the battalion scouts was "Recon All the Way, Sir". We referred to ourselves as "Raccoon Platoons". When I was in 17th Air Cavalry, we referred to ourselves as 'Scouts' or ARPs (Aero-Rifle Platoon).

I'm not sure, but these days I believe Cavalry and Armor still use 'Scout' to designate their people and 'Recon' for Infantry.

Is "Snoop and Poop" still in vogue?

There are US Army Recon schools called "Recondo" and the graduate is authorised to wear a Recondo patch when he sucessfully graduates. But specific units? I dunno.

Only while still assigned to the Division. It comes off when you transfer.

I've never heard a Recondo graduate call himself "recon."

And FWIW, Recondo was never a "US Army Recon school."
