Michael Lumpkin of the U.S. Navy will be the guest speaker at the Veterans Day service scheduled for 9:45 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Sikeston Field House. [/FONT][/SIZE][/FONT] [FONT=Verdana][SIZE=2][FONT=Verdana]A member of one of the world’s most elite fighting forces - the Navy SEALs - Lumpkin recently completed a combat tour in Iraq as the deputy commander of a joint special operations task force directing both Navy SEAL and Army Ranger units. [/FONT][/SIZE][/FONT] [FONT=Verdana][SIZE=2][FONT=Verdana]Earlier in his career, Lumpkin played an active role in the nation’s fight against the illegal drug trade and served in duty stations throughout Latin America. He received the Armed Forces Preparedness Associate Award of Excellence for his outstanding contributions to national security during counter-drug operations. [/FONT][/SIZE][/FONT] [FONT=Verdana][SIZE=2][FONT=Verdana]Lumpkin graduated from the Navy SEAL school in 1989 and has been in a host of assignments in Naval Special Warfare. He also received a master’s degree in national security affairs at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, Calif. His service decorations include five Meritorious Service Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals and three Joint Service Achievement Medals along with various campaign and unit citations. Local veterans from the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion will also participate in the service along with the Sikeston High School band, choir and orchestra. Gerald Beam, U.S.N.R., will offer the prayer of remembrance and personnel from the Sikeston National Guard will post colors and perform the 21-gun salute. [/FONT][/SIZE][/FONT] [FONT=Verdana][SIZE=2][FONT=Verdana]After the service veterans and their families are invited to the American Legion Post on South Kingshighway for lunch provided by the Ladies Auxiliary.
