In Halberstam's book about the early days of the Korean War,
The Coldest Winter, there's a passage which recounts the commander of X Corps, Edward Almond, showing up on the battlefield after some unit had just taken horrendous losses and insisting that some men be gathered to receive Silver Stars.
Just to get him out of their hair, the Colonel in charge gathered some people at random, including a cook who had no idea what it was about, and Almond unceremoniously pinned the Silver Stars on their uniform, including that of one officer who had taken some terrible losses.
When he left, the officer who'd lost a lot of men took his Silver Star off and just threw it in the snow. No followup on what the cook did with his.
