I read of him from good sports article- it details some famous US sporting-Men who are KIA during military service:

To be clear- the sporting background gives them no special status over others KIA. But it was good writing for sports-writer on US Memorial Day in my opinion.

One Iwo Jima book I read a long time ago had a story about Lummus standing on the stumps of his legs, still firing at the enemy and urging his men on after stepping on the land mine. He sounds like he was a fantastic leader.
